history

Logo of Salzburg TV

ServusTV emerged from the broadcaster SalzburgTV , in which Red Bull acquired a 95 percent stake on January 1, 2007. In 2008 the two founders of SalzburgTV left the station, the reasons mentioned were strong differences regarding the future of the station. Their shares were also acquired by Red Bull.

After the relaunch had been postponed several times, the station was renamed ServusTV on October 1, 2009, 5:25 p.m. and expanded into a 24-hour special-interest program with magazines and traditional programs, reports on events, cinema, sports, travel and culinary delights. that provides information, education, advice and entertainment. At the same time, the version in HD resolution was activated.

At the beginning of 2010, 3D test broadcasts using the ColorCode 3D method were introduced, for which anaglyph glasses are required. However, there were no fixed times for 3D broadcasts, as ServusTV initially broadcast these programs on a test basis as part of the Red Bull TV window . In addition, sightseeing flights over the Alps-Danube-Adriatic region were broadcast in 3D as part of the Vogelfrei program (Tuesday to Friday). Despite the extensive offer in the various branches, the program in Austria was only licensed as a branch program for a long time. It was not until April 2013 that the licensing KommAustria recognized the offer as a full program. In Germany it was initially still regarded as a special-interest program with a focus on entertainment; it was only recognized as a full program in 2015. The Austrian license is decisive for the program broadcaster, the German license only for distribution in the German cable networks.

In Germany, ServusTV has also been broadcast via Telekom Entertain since September 1, 2010 . In addition, there has been an additional feed since December 20, 2010 , so that, according to the broadcaster, advertisements by German advertisers via cable and satellite can be considered separately. The program itself (with the exception of the DEL and EBEL transmissions as part of the Servus Hockey Night) will not be disconnected. From December 2011 to January 2014, ServusTV in Berlin was also broadcast via DVB-T.

On May 3, 2016, Red Bull Media House announced that it would cease broadcasting for economic reasons. The discussed establishment of a works council was the decisive factor. Dietrich Mateschitz later stated that the impending establishment of a works council was "not exactly useful" for the independence of the broadcaster. He went on to comment that the works council came about "anonymously, supported by the union and the Chamber of Labor". The "independence, autonomy and inability to be influenced, especially by political parties, regardless of the direction, was a supporting pillar of Servus TV from the start". After almost all employees spoke out against a works council in writing the next day and also in a video message to Mateschitz Asked to continue the station, it announced a day later that it had reversed its decision.

On July 31, 2016, Red Bull Media House confirmed that it would cease broadcasting operations in Germany and Switzerland at the end of the year and return the broadcasting licenses in the respective countries. In this context, the courier reports an estimated annual shortfall of 40 to 50 million euros. Mateschitz was quoted there as saying that "the right investments are now being made in order to be sustainably successful in the long term." Since the Austrian version of the program was already encrypted a few months ago for legal reasons and the ORF smart card required for decryption was only available in Is available in Austria, it will no longer be possible to receive Servus TV outside of Austria. It is not yet known how many jobs will be lost as a result of this setting, but the Servus TV regional office in Munich is primarily affected .

On October 18, 2016, it was announced that it would continue broadcasting in Germany and Switzerland in 2017. "The very positive response from TV viewers [...] motivated us [...] to continue broadcasting ServusTV in the classic TV sector, to remain accessible in this way and to round off the marketing potential," it said in the Explanation by a sender speaker.

program

The ServusTV program has six categories. The column consists of news and magazines, including Servus Nachrichten, Servus am Abend and Talk in Hangar-7 . In documentations and portraits, for example, Terra Mater or home lights are broadcast. There is also the folk culture magazine Hoagascht. Entertainment includes Quizmaster in the evening program or Homo Austriacus in the main evening program. With ServusTV's cultural program, you can see programs like kulTOUR with Holender or literaTOUR with Alfred Komarek and Theodora Bauer . The Servus Hockey Night and Sport and Talk from Hangar-7 as well as MotoGP are shown in the Sport program. The "Red Bull TV window" shows content from the world of Red Bull.

ServusTV has been a TV partner of the Austrian Ice Hockey League since 2010 . In addition, they were TV partners of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) from 2013 to 2016 . One game per week from both leagues was shown as part of the Servus Hockey Night . In the play-offs , more and more games were broadcast, some in conference call.

In 2017 ServusTV produced its second fictional series with Trakehner Blood after Eine Couch für alle . Since November 2018, the next self-produced series has been broadcast with the crime series Meiberger - In the head of the perpetrator .

reception

Ferdinand Wegscheider has been director of the station since 2016 and is therefore also responsible for the program and budget, which is rather unusual for television stations and was previously separate at ServusTV. Wegscheider has already come under fire for his controversial weekly TV commentary “Der Wegscheider”, which earned him the nickname “Anger Editor-in-Chief”. His positions are sometimes viewed as right-wing populist and are often spread in the right-wing scene, something Wegscheider has not distanced himself from so far.

The political orientation of the station is often discussed by the media. The Süddeutsche referred to ServusTV as the “home broadcaster of Austrian right-wing populism”, similar to the online magazine Vice . In 2016 an issue of the talk show “ Talk im Hangar 7 ” with the title “How dangerous are our Muslims” was broadcast. Götz Kubitschek , an activist of the New Right , was also invited , whereupon three out of five guests canceled their participation after it became known. Also in 2016, ServusTV was the only independent broadcaster to be admitted to the European Forum Linz, which is connected to publications monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In 2019, Martin Sellner's renewed invitation to a talk show was also sharply criticized.

ServusTV can be received in Austria and Germany.

  • DVB-T2 (Austria)
  • DVB-C (Germany, Austria, Switzerland)
  • DVB-S2 (all of Europe)
  • Internet (free access worldwide, but IPTV only with individual operators)

The broadcast of ServusTV Germany via satellite is unencrypted. Since March 1, 2016, Servus TV has only been broadcast encrypted in Austria. The reason for this is the acquisition of the Moto GP rights, which were only acquired for Austria. Reception is possible via the ORF smart card or Sky Austria at no additional cost. Servus TV Germany is not affected by this change. Therefore, only a digital satellite system with a corresponding receiver is required for reception. In the Kabel Deutschland network, the HD version of the channel is encrypted and can only be received with a chargeable smart card.

In 2017, the technical range was 96 percent in Austria, 85 percent in Germany and 33 percent in Switzerland.
