Salzburg TV was the first private television broadcaster in Austria in 1995. In 2007, Red Bull Media House GmbH took over the majority in the station and built ServusTV from it. The appointment took place in 2010.

history

The station was created in the early 1990s from the film production company UNI PRO of the former ORF editors Ferdinand Wegscheider and Christian Jörgner. The plans to start a private TV station were realized with the start of broadcasting on September 17, 1995. The cable from SAFE AG (now Salzburg AG ) reached 15,000 households in the Pinzgau when it started broadcasting .

The station caused a sensation in 2000 when Salzburg TV became the first private TV broadcaster in Austria to put a terrestrial transmitter into operation and could therefore also be received in Salzburg via an indoor antenna.

However, there was no legal basis for private terrestrial television, which is why the station on the Untersberg was operated illegally as a pirate station. The transmitter was switched off, sealed and confiscated by radio surveillance officers 5 days after it started on October 30, 2000 . To protest against this measure, Salzburg TV boss Wegscheider went on hunger strike for two weeks. A legal basis for private terrestrial television was created with the Private Television Act, which came into force on August 1, 2001. In 2002, Salzburg TV received a terrestrial broadcasting license and has been available via antenna since December 2002 (Untersberg channel 36: 591.25 MHz, UHF, band IV (21-37) analog).

In 2004, the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce (48 percent), the Raiffeisenverband Salzburg (37 percent) and the Spängler Bank (10 percent) took over a 95 percent stake in Salzburg TV, thus saving the private TV broadcaster from bankruptcy.

On January 1, 2007, the consortium consisting of the Chamber of Commerce, Raiffeisenbank and Spängler-Bank sold its 95 percent stake in Red Bull . Other interested parties had also applied. The two founders Ferdinand Wegscheider and Christian Jörgner initially retained their shares of 4 and 1 percent respectively.

At the end of March 2008, the two founders, the previous editor-in-chief and partner Ferdinand Wegscheider and his deputy Christian Jörgner, left the station and also sold their shares to Red Bull. The reason given in the local press is the irreconcilable differences between the founders and Red Bull about the future design.

Technical range and reception

According to its own information, Salzburg TV had a technical reach of 760,000 viewers in the state of Salzburg and in parts of Upper Austria. The signal was broadcast via cable and, since December 2002, analogue-terrestrial. Since December 1st, 2008, after months of rumors about the distribution, the program could be received by satellite via Astra 19.2 °.

Salzburg TV as an advertising platform

The station was particularly popular as an advertising platform for local medium-sized businesses and was an important training partner for the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences . In this context, the program “ Bonzai ” was produced at Salzburg TV by students from the digital television program at the University of Applied Sciences, which was now discontinued , and broadcast on the station.
