The Salzburg University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences founded in the mid-1990s in the province of Salzburg with four locations in Kuchl , Puch bei Hallein (Urstein district), the Salzburg University Hospital and the Cardinal Schwarzach Hospital St. Johann im Pongau . It offers eighteen bachelor's and twelve master’s courses as well as two postgraduate master’s courses in the fields of engineering, social and economic sciences, design, media & art, and health sciences.
There are cooperation projects with business partners, joint projects between the degree programs and an exchange of students and teachers with more than 130 partner universities worldwide. The FH Salzburg currently (November 2018) has around 2700 students and over 9500 graduates.

Until August 2005, the courses were spread over three locations: the Techno-Z Salzburg in the Salzburg district of Itzling ▼ , the Vocational Promotion Institute in the district of Elisabeth-Vorstadt and at a training center in Kleßheim ▼ (municipality of Wals-Siezenheim ).
Since then, the facilities have been located at the two locations in Puch near Hallein ▼ and in Kuchl ▼ south of Salzburg, also on the SALK campus in the Salzburg University Hospital and, since autumn 2019, in the Cardinal Schwarzach Hospital in St. Johann im Pongau.
history
With the establishment of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in 1995, the telecommunications technology & systems (TKS) courses in Salzburg-Itzling and wood technology & wood management in Kuchl were established. MultiMediaArt was added in 1996 and Information Technology & Management (IWM) in 1998 . In the summer of 1998 the courses moved to the TechnoZ building complex at Schillerstrasse 30 in Salzburg.
In autumn 1999 the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce took over the FHS as the sole shareholder, and Raimund Ribitsch has been the FH managing director since January 1, 2000. In 2001, the range of courses was expanded to include the digital television & interactive services and development & management of tourist offers . In 2002, the Design & Product Management course began in Kuchl.
Since January 1, 2003, the FH courses in Kuchl and Salzburg have been united in one company. In the autumn of the same year, the building design-wood (bgh) course began in Kuchl. IWM was run under the new name Business Administration & Information Management (bwi). At the beginning of October 2003, construction work began on the Salzburg-Urstein University of Applied Sciences campus . Almost at the same time, the new technical college building for the three courses in Kuchl was opened.
On October 22, 2004, the FHS College unanimously elected former Vice Chancellor Erhard Busek as rector . Busek had been involved in the founding of the Austrian university of applied sciences ten years earlier as Federal Minister for Science and Research . Since March 1, 2005, the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce and the Salzburg Chamber of Labor have each held 50% of the company shares in the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. In March, all of Salzburg's university of applied sciences courses were merged. The social work course, previously run by the Salzburg Chamber of Labor , became part of the university offer. The TKS course was carried out under the new name Information Technology & System Management (ITS) from the winter semester 2005/2006 .
In 2006 and 2007 the range of courses was expanded again. The first bachelor's degree programs started in autumn 2006, and in 2007 the entirely English-language degree program Innovation & Management in Tourism was also introduced . Since September 2006, Doris Walter has been the second managing director of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences alongside Raimund Ribitsch. In March 2008, the Matador dormitory was opened at the Kuchl location. The groundbreaking ceremony for the extension on the campus there took place in June 2008. The MultiMediaTechnology course began in October of the same year .
On July 20, 2008 Erhard Busek was re-elected as rector, Karin Mairitsch became vice-rector, who succeeded Gerhard Jöchtl. The two-year term of office began on November 1st, 2008. In October 2009, the Health & Nursing degree program and the MultiMediaArt , Design & Product Management and Information Technology & System Management master’s degree began . At the same time, the extension at the Kuchl location was opened.
In May 2011 Kerstin Fink was elected as the new FH rector and followed Erhard Busek in autumn. Hilmar Linder and Günther Grall became vice-rectors.
From September 2010 the buildings and parking areas at the Puch-Urstein site were expanded. Since May 2012, a further 4400 m² building space has been available for teaching and research. In June 2012 the Austrian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Christian Doppler Research Association gave the go-ahead for a Josef Ressel Center at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The center for user-oriented smart grid privacy, security and control deals with the acceptance of intelligent power grids by end consumers.
The four-year term of office of the newly elected FH rector and FH college chairman Gerhard Blechinger and the FH vice-rector Roland Steiner began in October 2015. You took over the office of FH Rector Kerstin Fink and FH Vice Rector Hilmar Linder. In November 2015, Günther Grall was confirmed in his office as the second Vice Rector for another four years. The rectorate and the management together form the university management.
Since January 2016, there has been a startup center for students, alumni and FH employees on the Urstein campus of the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. On June 13, 2016, the BMWFW's state prize for excellent teaching, the "Ars docendi", was awarded. In the “Teaching with special consideration of different educational biographies” category, the award for outstanding performance in teaching goes to FH-Prof. Dr. Thomas Reiter and his team. He teaches, researches and leads the Smart Building course on the Kuchl campus and receives special recognition for his teaching concept in cooperative projects. In the same year, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences was the first Austrian university to be awarded the diversity certificate ZukunftVIELFALT® for its efforts to achieve holistic diversity management and also received the state quality mark for university and family.
In 2017, the Information Technology and System Management (ITS) course started with a new training course called “Professional Programmer”. The University of Applied Sciences is reacting to the acute shortage of skilled workers in the IT industry. Together with five different Salzburg IT companies, a total of 12 employees are trained in the areas of programming and software development. In addition, a two-semester certificate course "Search Engine Marketing" is offered at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Advertising and Market Communication specialist group of the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce and the WIFI Salzburg under the association "Digital Expert". For the third time, the “Ars docendi”, the state award of the Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW), went to the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences: On June 26, Mag. Ursula Reisenberger received the state award for excellent teaching (“Ars docendi”) for their innovative course concept for the midwifery course. New look for the FH: As a result of a strategy and positioning process, the FH Salzburg has had a completely new appearance since the beginning of September 2017. This should strengthen the brand values “innovation” and “relevance” as well as a clear and unmistakable profile.
The new bachelor's degree in Business Informatics & Digital Transformation started in 2018. In terms of content, the course combines the existing courses in "Information Technology & System Management" and "Business Administration" to create an innovative range of courses that meets economic needs and is required. FH Managing Director Raimund Ribitsch is re-elected FHK President. With a unanimous resolution of the General Assembly, Raimund Ribitsch was re-elected President of the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Conference (FHK) for the next three years (2019-2021).
The renowned opinion research institute IFES carried out 3,200 surveys on education and university providers across Austria on behalf of the Austrian Conference of Universities of Applied Sciences (FHK) in 2018. There were also another 350 surveys only in Salzburg. Conclusion: Universities of applied sciences enjoy a very good image among the general population. Always in the top field, sometimes even top value in Austria: the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. In May 2019, Gerhard Blechinger will be re-elected as chairman of the FH college. The term of office of the FH rectorate begins on October 1, 2019.
Infrastructure
There are 328 campus apartments available for students at the Puch-Urstein location and 102 at the Kuchl location . There is a cafeteria at both locations.
In the immediate vicinity of the Urstein campus is Urstein Castle , where FHS courses are held, among other things.
Directly in front of the Urstein campus is the Puch-Urstein S-Bahn , which takes you to Salzburg's main train station in less than twenty minutes. Kuchl is also a S-Bahn station. Both locations can be reached by road via the Tauern Autobahn, as well as the Urstein campus via Halleiner Landstrasse (about ten minutes to Salzburg and Hallein ) and Kuchl via Salzachtal Strasse . Bike paths along the Salzach to Urstein are an alternative for sporty people.

Research centers
There is currently a research center at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The "Josef Ressel Center for User-Oriented Smart Grid Privacy, Security and Control" (assigned to the engineering sciences, start in January 2013), which was transferred to the "Center for Safe Energy Informatics" in November 2017.
Accreditations & Certifications
The courses offered by the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences have been accredited by FIBAA since November 2011 .
In November 2013, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences received the state seal of approval for family-friendly universities from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth , which is intended to express the good compatibility of studies, research, teaching and family. Also in 2013, the FHS received the Diploma Supplement label from the EU Commission, which recognizes the special transparency and quality of the implementation of the Bologna goals .
In 2015, the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences received the seal of approval for workplace health promotion (BGF).
ÖH FH Salzburg
The “ Austrian Student Union at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences” (ÖH FH Salzburg) is the legal representation of students at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. This interest group has been set up as a separate body since July 2015. For the students of the University of Applied Sciences there is a compulsory membership in the corporation under public law .
University representation
The University Representation (HV) of the students is the most important collegial body of the student body at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences and is elected every two years, most recently in May 2017. Hendrik Klein has been chairman since July 1, 2015. Deputy is Aziz Khouni.
