The FH Wiener Neustadt was founded on October 3rd, 1994. In the first year of study, a total of 169 students were taught in one business and one technical course.

In 1996 the number of students at the FH Wiener Neustadt more than doubled. The original building (5,000 m²) was therefore expanded to 8,700 m².

On August 31, 1999, the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt was named the 1st FH in Austria by the Federal Ministry of Science and Education. In September 1999, the first students of the dislocated FH course at the Wieselburg location began their studies and the employees began their research and teaching activities. The FH research subsidiary FOTEC also started its business activities.

In September 2002 the course in biotechnical processes started in Tulln.

In 2004, the study program at the Wiener Neustadt location was converted to the new system of bachelor and master studies in accordance with the Bologna process ; until then, only diploma courses (Mag. (FH), Dipl.-Ing. (FH)) were offered.

In 2005 the Academy for Health Professions moved to the Wiener Neustadt campus and was admitted the following year in the form of four bachelor's degree programs (biomedical analysis, occupational therapy, radiological technology and speech therapy). The Police Leadership course was also newly started in cooperation with the Security Academy of the Federal Ministry of the Interior , primarily for senior officers of the Federal Police guard .

In spring 2015 the FH Wiener Neustadt took over 100% of Ferdinand Porsche Fern-FH. However, at the insistence of the ministry, this was sold again in 2017, as one provider should not run two universities of applied sciences.

The legal interest representation of the students (legal wording: "Hochschülerinnen- und Hochschülerschaft") at the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt (Campus Wieselburg, Campus Tulln and the students in Rudolfinerhaus in Vienna) is called ÖH FHWN and is re-elected every two years.

This has been set up as a separate public corporation since July 2015. For students of the University of Applied Sciences there is compulsory membership in the form of an ÖH fee of currently € 20.20 per semester. Through this, students enjoy liability and accident insurance protection.

criticism

The Strategic Security Management course came under criticism in 2017 after some teachers in this branch of training are also senior employees of the Ministry of the Interior and therefore the selection of students, who mainly come from police circles, is not just based on professional qualifications, but also suspects that it takes place on the basis of political dependencies.
