Library in the center of Wiener Neustadt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The library in the center of Wiener Neustadt (until 2019 Wiener Neustadt City Library) is located at Schlögelgasse 22–26 in the Carmelite Church in Wiener Neustadt .

history

The library was founded as a commercial open-air library in 1881 and was owned by a society for commercial teaching and general public education, with financing through membership fees from users and donations from commercial entrepreneurs, the savings bank and the municipality. In 1899 the municipality took over the library and set it up in the mourning house at Hauptplatz 2, a house that the municipality acquired in 1881 from the owner family, Mourning. In 1921 the library in Augustingasse 1 was relocated to the former officers 'house, which was sold in 1935, whereupon the library moved to Pfarrplatz 1 in the former citizens' hospital. During the Second World War, the library building was destroyed in an air raid on March 16, 1945. In September 1945 the library was reopened at Herzog-Leopold-Straße 21 in the building complex of the former Carmelite convent. On December 1, 2010, the library was relocated to a former building of the Lower Austrian Regional Health Insurance Fund on Ferdinand-Porsche-Ring 3.

In autumn 2019, the Wiener Neustadt City Library was merged with the library of the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences to form the library in the center . This merger is the first ever merger of a scientific and a public library in Austria.
