history

The former monastery in the northeast corner of the formerly fortified old town bordered the eastern city wall and stands with the dominant main facade as an eye-catcher point de vue in the visual axis of Deutschgasse in the more village-like Schlögelgasse. The formerly extensive monastery garden is partly preserved with the walling and is now built with various buildings of the Wiener Neustadt Regional Hospital.

Initially, from 1241 onwards, the area was built in the north-east corner of the city, founded in 1192, by the Teutonic Order, which was destroyed in a fire in 1608. In 1673 the Teutonic Order exchanged the area for the Möger'sche Freihaus in Bahngasse 3 and 5.

In 1697 the foundation stone of the Carmelite Church was laid according to the plans of Brother Athanasius, the civil architect Martin Wittwer. The church was consecrated in 1718 and abolished with the monastery in 1783. From 1787, a silk and velvet ribbon factory was set up in the building by Christoph Andrä and Carl Friedrich Bräunlich. The church was again used as a house of prayer for the Protestant factory workers. From 1885 to 1889 it was converted into a residential complex. The church was converted into an Apollo cinema in the first half of the 20th century . In 1967 the east wing of the former monastery was converted into the administration building of the Wiener Neustadt Regional Hospital. From 1979 the church was used by the municipality as an exhibition hall for art exhibitions.

The high altar of the church was transferred to the parish church of Altenmarkt an der Triesting around 1788 .

Corvinus Campus

In January 2016 it was announced that a campus of the Wiener Neustadt University of Applied Sciences with a total area of 14,500 square meters would be built around the Carmelite Church from 2017 to 2019 .

With architect Karl Scheibenreif as ARGE Scheibenreif – Strixner, the baroque nave was largely vacated as a central room and made usable as a library with reading and study areas as the main room for events.
