history

Rudolfiner Association

The Rudolfinerverein was founded in 1875 by the surgeon Gustav Jurié (1841-1924). Jurié as chairman, however, left the association after disagreements with the proponent Theodor Billroth . This was reconstituted in 1879, Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek became the first president, and Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary took over the protectorate. The driving force of the association, from 1880 " Rudolfiner Association for the construction and maintenance of a pavilion hospital for the purpose of training nurses for the sick and wounded in Vienna ", was the surgeon Theodor Billroth. In 1881 the first course for nurses was held at the Vienna Commercial Academy .

Rudolfinerhaus

The Rudolfinerhaus was founded in 1882 with Theodor Billroth as director to enable the nurses in training to receive theoretical and practical training. It was initially a barrack with 20 beds. The patients were soldiers who had been wounded in a riot in Dalmatia .

The surgeon Robert Gersuny became Primarius here in 1882.

At the end of 1885, the Rudolf Pavilion , which began on May 5, 1884 and designed by Franz von Gruber , was opened. In 1891 the central building with the operating theater and the ambulance was completed, followed by the Billroth pavilion in 1895, the farm building in 1905 and the Wilczek pavilion in 1907.

During the First World War, the “ Patriotic Aid Association of the Red Cross Lower Austria ” took over the administration of the Rudolfinerhaus, which had been converted into a hospital , and the number of beds was increased from 100 to 360. School operation was only possible to a limited extent during this time.

After the desolate building became a civilian hospital again in 1918, the “I. and II. catering class “introduced the free choice of doctor and opened an obstetrical department.

The "annexation" of Austria to the German Reich in 1938 brought about the dissolution of the Rudolfiner Association. The Rudolfinerhaus itself was incorporated into the German Red Cross and renamed " DRK Billroth Hospital ". Romy Schneider , the daughter of Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach Retty, was born here on September 23, 1938 .

The Rudolfinerhaus was badly damaged by a bomb attack on March 15, 1945. Six employees were killed trying to save patients.

In October 1945, hospital operations could be resumed in a section of the Rudolfinerhaus, which was subordinated to the public administration as a former German property. In 1948 it returned to the property of the newly constituted Rudolfiner Association.

In 1958, a new school building financed by the “ Committee of Friends of the Sisterhood of the Rudolfinerinnen ” was opened.

In 1966 the Austrian painter and rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Herbert Boeckl, died as a result of a stroke in the Rudolfinerhaus.

In the early 1970s, the Rudolfinerhaus got into a financial and personnel crisis. After the hospital management was reorganized in 1975, the house was rebuilt and rebuilt.

At this time, Karl Fellinger , who had previously worked at the General Hospital and retired in 1975, was increasingly involved in the Rudolfinerhaus Private Hospital , where he also became President of the Rudolfiner Association in 1989. He also used his international contacts - especially in the Middle East - to turn the hospital into a top medical clinic. Karl Fellinger died on November 8, 2000 in the Rudolfinerhaus.

The Rudolfinerhaus made international headlines when, in 2004, the then Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko was treated here and the doctors diagnosed dioxin poisoning .
