Imaani , also Imaani Saleem , actually Melanie Crosdale (* 1972 in Nottingham , England ) is a British singer .

Career

Imaani began her musical career as a background and studio singer for artists such as Jocelyn Brown , Gloria Gaynor , Betty Wright , Mica Paris , Stephen Marley and Julian Marley . She became known to a wide audience in 1998 when she took part in A Song for Europe, the British preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest. For the song Where Are You? Written by Scott English, Phil Manikiza and Simon Stirling . She received 70421 calls and was able to prevail clearly against the other three applicants and thus won the chance to represent her home country in the competition. At the Eurovision Song Contest 1998 in Birmingham she was also successful and finished second with 166 points, only six points behind the winner Dana International . Where are you? was a small hit in Great Britain and reached number 15 in the singles charts with over 100,000 records sold.

Despite the success in the competition, the record label EMI decided not to release another single. In 2000 Imaani was the lead singer of the formation Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy and reached number 12 in the British sales charts with a cover version of the Adina Howard classic Freak like Me . Shortly thereafter, she joined the Jazz - Funk - band Incognito in, with whom she recorded several CDs. In 2006 she worked as a singer on the house song Bring Me Love by the group Copyright Project. The single came to number three on the club charts in Great Britain.

In 2014 their first album Standing Tall was released.
