Dana International ( Hebrew דנה אינטרנשיונל; born February 2, 1969 in Tel Aviv ; actually Sharon Cohen שרון כהן; born as Yaron Cohen ירון כהן) is an Israeli pop singer . In 1998 she won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Diva in Birmingham .

Career

In 1995 she took part in the Israeli preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with the title Layla tov Europe and came second behind the singer Liora . In 1998 she prevailed in the qualification and also won the main competition with Diva . It was Israel's third victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. The participation of the transsexual Dana International caused resistance in religious circles in her home country, who called for a more conservative contribution to be sent to the competition. In neighboring Egypt , the Arabic version of their title was banned.

At the Eurovision Song Contest 1999 in Jerusalem Dana International performed in the break between the entries and the evaluation with the song Dror Yikra and Stevie Wonders Lied Free in front of the city ​​walls of Jerusalem . Dana International uses her popularity specifically to defend the rights of sexual minorities . In 1999 she took part in a campaign of the Dutch section of Amnesty International in part, on human rights violations of gays and lesbians wanted to draw attention.
