Lys Assia
Lys Assia [ ˈliːs ˈasjɐ ] (born March 3, 1924 in Rupperswil as Rosa Mina Schärer ; † March 24, 2018 in Zollikerberg ) was a Swiss pop singer who also appeared in several films. In 1956 she was the first winner of the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson (today: Eurovision Song Contest ) with the song Refrain .
Life
Lys Assia was born in 1924 to Frederic Schärer, who runs an installation business, and his wife, née von Rodel . She grew up with her eleven older siblings in Zurich, took ballet lessons as a child and later attended the conservatory and art academy. She made her debut as a dancer at the age of sixteen at the Corso-Palast in Zurich. As a member of the Riva Ballet, she was involved in looking after the French troops during World War II. First appearances as a singer followed in Nice. When His Master's Voice was looking for new voices in Switzerland in 1942, Lys Assia was also chosen, and she received her first recording contract.
After the war she went on her first international tours and got the opportunity in Paris to stand in for the sick Josephine Baker . She did it so convincingly that she was allowed to continue to appear on the show. Lys Assia conquered the German record market in 1950 with the title O mein Papa from the operetta Das Feuerwerk (the High German version of the Swiss comedy The Black Pike ) by Paul Burkhard . In 1956 she was the first winner of the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with the song Refrain , for which she also received a gold record . In the following year 1957 she started again, but took the penultimate place here. In 1958 she started again and came second.
On January 11, 1957, Rosa Mina Schärer married Johann Heinrich Kunz in Zurich. During the nine months of her marriage to her terminally ill husband, she was at the height of her career at home and especially abroad. In Germany she was one of the most successful singers. In Switzerland she was one of the interpreters of the songs of the composer Artur Beul . Until 1964 she published records with Telefunken-Decca and occasionally with Philips . With Stars from Syracuse , she was included in the German hit lists for the last time in autumn 1962.
With her second husband, the Danish consul general and multimillionaire Oscar Pedersen, Lys Assia settled in his homeland and ran hotels with him in Europe, Japan and South America. After his accidental death in 1995, she settled in southern France, but later returned to Germany and got back into show business. Among other things, she gave a concert in the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg in February 2002 and in March 2002 had a longer guest performance in the Madame Lothár Theater in Bremen . She lived in Erlenbach on Lake Zurich .
In 2003 she released a CD with fourteen songs. Sometimes a little song and longing for you were able to help . In 2005 the single Rom lay im Schnee was released, a forerunner of the new album Lady in Blue, which contains eight newly recorded oldies, ten new ones and the two extracts from the album Sehnsucht nach dich . Her subsequent release Back to Athens was a success. She toured Europe with Refrain for the 50th anniversary of the Grand Prix. She was guest of honor in the anniversary show in Copenhagen and then in the German preliminary decision for the Grand Prix 2006 in Hamburg.
In the Swiss preliminary decision on the Grand Prix of Folk Music 2007 on April 21, 2007, the title Tell me where do the angels live, which Lys Assia performed together with Beatrice Egli , received the most votes. At the international finals of the Grand Prix of Folk Music in Vienna, she came twelfth out of 16 places. For her failure, she blamed her singing partner in the press and on TV.
In 2008 she and the two moderators opened the voting for the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade . At the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow she presented the winner Alexander Rybak with the trophy.
In 2011, the Swiss director Andres Brütsch shot a biopic about the life of Lys Assia.
In September 2011, together with Ralph Siegel , she presented the contribution C'était ma vie for the Swiss preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan . Also in 2013 Lys Assia wanted to take part in the ESC in Malmö. She applied together with the four Bernese rappers from New Jack with the contribution All in your head for the preliminary decision of Switzerland, but to no avail. The title also comes from Ralph Siegel.
Lys Assia died on March 24, 2018 at the age of 94 in the Zollikerberg Hospital.
