action

For a long time, the hotel owner Maria Alsbacher was tied to a significantly older and, in the end, ailing husband. His death is something of a liberation for her, and Mary is open to new happiness. She believes she has found this in Monsieur Gidou, the conductor and singer in her establishment. But this relationship alienates Maria with her two children Paul and Dorothy. Her son in particular can't come to terms with the fact that his mother wants to marry this man in the foreseeable future. Gidou is considered a greyhound who only wants Maria's money. Paul's childhood friend Lydia Bauer, who has been seriously ill for some time, shows him her love and unbreakable loyalty by jeopardizing her good reputation and getting involved with the windy bandleader with full physical effort to open Maria's eyes.

Maria should deliberately catch her and her future partner at a mutual, intimate rendezvous in flagrant. In fact, this plan succeeds, and Gidou is suddenly history. Paul now knows what he has in the loyal, self-sacrificing childhood friend. Maria, on the other hand, realized late, but not too late, with whom she almost swapped rings and in this way finds her way back to her children. With an illusion poorer and alone again, Maria finally resigns, while her son Paul sees his life's mission in making Lydia as pleasant as possible in the last few weeks of her life.

Reviews

"(Praises the) atmospheric neatness and security with which the director Rudolf Jugert, cameraman Václav Vích and the very precise actors became a team (...) But the exciting work and the intense and painting camera that scans the faces is fascinating."

- Berlin vote from February 7, 1953

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The fact that this action only experiences a dramatic concentration after describing the mental state of her characters, makes up for the subtle detail work of the director, film maker and actor, where Schmitz and Knef are already proving their position in German film . "

"Incredible, melancholy social drama at magazine level."
