action

The accountant Karl Müller loves secretary Eva Brunner in vain. She always rejects him, but allows herself to be ensnared by Director Morath, although she has always emphasized in front of her colleagues that she is not interested in him. Meanwhile, Karl inherits from an unknown uncle. In addition to a large sum of money, the inheritance also includes a large and luxuriously furnished apartment with a caretaker, Mrs. Chlestek. Karl soon notices that his uncle's wealth came from working after work, so he kept the payroll books at numerous companies outside of working hours. Karl takes on this task.

Karl's new suits and his somewhat luxurious lifestyle - he now always eats three servings in the canteen - make for a whisper in the office. Since Karl is considered capable, he is appointed head of the retail department on a trial basis at the suggestion of the general director's daughter Irene Rotter. Rumors soon spread that he was Irene's lover, who also made his new lifestyle possible for him. Eva reacts jealously and now demonstratively meets with Morath. When Karl happens to see her in his car, he pulls her into his taxi and the passers-by think he has kidnapped Eva. Karl had already been arrested by the incompetent investigators Fuchs and Jäger as an alleged non-ferrous metal thief. Now he is taken to the station as a kidnapper and released again, which Police Commissioner Graupinger has become embarrassing. Numerous other arrests of Karl follow, which always turn out to be the wrong decision. This is particularly inconvenient when Karl receives a visit from the smuggler Mario Marinadi. He had extorted numerous watches from Karl's uncle and now wants to collect them from Karl. He also makes it clear that Director Morath is a reliable part of the smuggling ring. Caretaker Franziska Baldinger alarms the police again after listening, but they arrest Karl and not the gangster Marinadi. It was only Graupinger who arranged for the real criminal to be put behind bars. A little later Karl meets at an evening party at the general manager Rotter Morath's and confronts him with Marinadi's statements. Morath leaves, but Karl's evening is spoiled too, he believes that Eva, instead of Morath, has fallen for the general manager Rotter.

Karl has proven himself as the new head of the retail department and has given the company an increase in sales. Nevertheless, he feels alone in his apartment and goes to his old landlady. She advises him to just celebrate with some of his colleagues. He and two of Eve's colleagues return to his apartment, where two burglars are trying to rob a hidden safe in the apartment on Marinadi's instructions. Karl's two companions have just made themselves comfortable when the gangsters break into the safe and set a self-shot system in motion. Both gangsters end up passed out on the floor and the two women they discover believe Karl killed them. They alert the police once more, but after several bad experiences, Jäger and Fuchs refuse to do anything against Karl. Karl meanwhile ties up the intruders and calls the police, who arrest the two men. At work, General Manager Rotter explains to Eva that he has to go home earlier because his daughter has become engaged. Eva thinks the fiancé is Karl, but Rotter corrects her. She is happy, but does not know how to win back Karl, who is jealous of all the directors. It turns out that Morath fled as part of the smugglers' gang. His position is therefore vacant and General Director Rotter makes Karl the new Director of the department. Eva falls around his neck the moment Karl enters the office. The irritation only lasts for a short time, after all, he learns that he is the new director, and Eva kisses him.
