action

The still young Federal Republic of Germany, in the mid-1950s. One school class, the upper prima, is considered to be particularly rebellious and difficult to control. After the previous class teacher died and it was rumored that one of the rebellious students was to blame for it, the task of ensuring peace and order in the class was transferred to the not entirely inexperienced teacher Helma Krauss. The following weeks and months, as the film title suggests, will be her great test. As a teacher, Ms. Krauss has modern and, for most of her older colleagues, very unconventional teaching methods. She does not insist on strictness and obedience to the dead, rather she tries to be an understanding and trustworthy contact person for the students.

With this “modern” view, however, she meets with a lot of headwind, both from the reactionary parents who insist on discipline and submission and their advisory board as well as from the ossified teacher colleagues and a powerful city council. Above all, Ms. Krauss wins the trust of her wards when she ensures that the student who is blamed for the death of her predecessor is not expelled from school. Now the ice has been broken, especially since the teacher is very committed to ensuring that the entire school class passes the Abitur. In passing, she also wins the heart of Dr. Clausen, the father of her student Elena.
