Gabriel Pellon

Gabriel Pellon (born February 10, 1900 in Metz , † December 28, 1975 in Munich ) was a German film architect and painter .

The early years

Born in Lorraine, the son of a well-known painter and art college teacher, he had trained as a painter and set designer under the guidance of his father after attending grammar school in 1917 and initially worked as a painting and scenery painter for the stage. Since 1918 he became familiar with the work of the Cubists and then moved to Berlin in 1919 , where he also dealt with Dadaism . In 1923 Pellon took part in a major art exhibition for the first time. His examination of Hieronymus Bosch's work led to his own series "magical leaves", some of which were shown in the exhibition of the so-called November group .

Life and work as a filmmaker

Towards the end of the 20s he turned to the cinema. In 1929 Gabriel Pellon made his debut alongside his experienced colleague Otto Gülstorff as a film architect for Wilhelm Dieterle's Ganghofer adaptation, Das Schweigen im Walde . It was to remain his only silent film. In talkies, Pellon was involved in an abundance of rather average entertainment productions, sensitive and ambitious works such as the literary subjects Liebelei and Der Schimmelreiter remained exceptions. His creation of a baroque Flemish village in the splendid moral painting Das Bad auf der Tenne , an early color film, can be regarded as his most outstanding achievement in the film of the Third Reich .

After the war, Gabriel Pellon quickly caught up with the German and West Berlin film scene. In 1950/51 he equipped Hans Deppes with both home-based box fillers Schwarzwaldmädel and Grün ist die Heide , the first color film productions in Germany. In later years Pellon often cooperated with his younger colleagues Hans-Jürgen Kiebach and Peter Röhrig. In his last working years, Pellon, who hardly received any orders, had to be content with architectural odds and ends (branch jargon: work 'in the column') and auxiliary painting activities. Larger tasks, such as the young German film exhibits, Closed season for foxes and The gentle run remained exceptions. His last cinema work had the charm of the naive and at the same time demonstrated Pellon's joy in fantasy and fantasy: for the horror film The Snake Pit and the Pendulum , which received very mixed reviews , he created paper-maché horror decorations such as dungeons, vaults and torture chambers as well as the wall paintings in the castle, reminiscent of the haunted, medieval end-times and hell depictions of Bosch, Pellon's former subject of study.

Activities as a freelance artist

Pellon, who was considered the teacher of the later Oscar winners Rolf Zehetbauer and Kiebach, continued to work as a freelance artist in addition to his work for the German cinema. Travels took him to Vienna , Bucharest , Rome , Florence , Nice and Paris . He was able to exhibit his works in Innsbruck and Berlin (1956 in the Springer Gallery). Some of his works (e.g. the paintings “Composition” and “Fish Bride”) from the 50s and 60s even found their way into auctions at the beginning of the new millennium. In 2009 and 2010, Pellon's work could still be viewed in the context of exhibitions such as 'Die phantastischen Welten des Gabriel Pellon' in the gallery Bernd Dürr.

Pellon died at the age of 75 in Munich, where he had settled from Berlin in 1960.
