Rolf Zehetbauer

Rolf Zehetbauer ( February 13, 1929 in MunichJanuary 23, 2022 ) was a German film architect . His work on the submarine drama Das Boot received particular recognition .

Life

Zehetbauer completed a construction internship after the end of the Second World War and joined Bavaria Film in Munich in 1947 as a set assistant . In 1949 he became an employee of the chief architect there, Ernst H. Albrecht . As early as 1951 he began working as an independent set designer and rose to become the studio's chief set designer by 1963. In 1965 he was mainly responsible for the scenery of the television series Raumpatrouille . At times, together with Werner Achmann and Herbert Strabel , he formed an extremely successful team of architects that worked on German and international productions (especially for those in the BavariaStudios shot US films) worked. His most famous film was Bob Fosse 's Cabaret , for which he received an Oscar . Zehetbauer was also responsible for the major German productions of Wolfgang Petersen and, with his sets for Das Boot and The Neverending Story , played a major part in the German director's global success. For Joseph Vilsmaier 's film adaptation of the novel Schlafes Bruder , he built a complete mountain village from the early 19th century, and for Vilsmaier's next main work Comedian Harmonists he created - as he did for Cabaret - the Berlin of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Rolf Zehetbauer was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy in 2003 . He also made a name for himself outside of the film industry. He designed the exhibition rooms of the Deutsches Museum Bonn , which opened in 1995, as well as the Mövenpick restaurants in Berlin. In 2004 he was commissioned to redesign the Hacker tent at the Oktoberfest .
