Das As der Asse (original title: L'As des as ) is a Franco-German feature film from 1982. Directed by Gérard Oury .

action

During the First World War , both flight officers crash in an aerial battle between the French Jo Cavalier and the German Gunther von Beckman. After engaging in a brawl over who shot whom, they both eventually become friends. In the German positions, during the aerial battle, the Jewish Lieutenant Rosenblum tried to organize an orderly anti-aircraft fire , but because of the inability of his subordinate, the war volunteer Hitler , he was literally in his underpants. The reprimand for this arouses or reinforces Hitler's anti-Semitism .

Twenty years later, Cavalier is the coach of the French national boxing team and Beckman is a general in the German Air Force . When Cavalier and his team traveled to Berlin for the Summer Olympics , he was confronted with the inhumanity of the regime: the Nazis devastated the shop of the bookseller Rosenblum and followed him and his family. A friendship develops between Cavalier, who cannot accept such hustle and bustle, and Rosenblum's grandson Simon. Despite his role as national coach, Cavalier takes on the Rosenblums and helps them escape to Austria with the support of his friend von Beckman . By chance, however, they did not get to the border, but to Hitler's residence on Obersalzberg , where they met the Führer and his sister Angela .

criticism

The lexicon of international films describes the film as "[s] in parts quite entertaining mixture of action and gags, which, however, slips badly when attempting a Hitler cartoon with a double role."

Prisma said: “Director Gérard Oury [...] managed an entertaining mix of comedy, action and historical drama. No wonder that the gags are not always accurate in the context of "Nazi Germany". Nevertheless, this is entertaining fun. "
