The trap snaps shut at midnight is the third film in the Jerry Cotton series from the 1960s.

action

Lew Hutton and Fat Krusky steal a truck for the transport of nitroglycerin for a planned jewel theft with the corresponding, clearly displayed warning notices , which they believe to be unloaded. To their surprise, after the truck was stolen, they found that it was still fully loaded. In her bogus accident with the truck in front of a jewelry store in New York , her accomplice Maureen can loot a million dollars due to the extensive cordon immediately initiated by the police because of the warning notices on the truck. However, Lew Hutton had previously hidden the contents of the truck, 20 canisters of nitroglycerin.

The police are now realizing that not only the jewels have been stolen, but that the truck being empty in the accident means that someone has unauthorized possession of 20 canisters of nitroglycerin. The police turn on the FBI and Jerry Cotton takes over the case.

The gangster Larry Link hears about the robbery, has Hutton and Krusky put out and, with Maureen's help, comes into possession of the canisters. Larry Link wants to extort five million dollars from the FBI with the threat to blow up large parts of Manhattan. To underline his demand, he wants his henchmen to blow up the busy Manhattan Bridge with one of the canisters . Jerry Cotton can prevent that at the last second.

The FBI, headed by Mr. High, then decides to pay the five million dollars anyway. They are handed over to Maureen, who escapes in a taxi. Jerry Cotton, however, had a tracking device attached to the case with the money and thus follows them undetected. Maureen brings the money to Larry's accomplice, while Larry stays with Nitro and stays in contact over the radio. While repacking the money, the tracking device is discovered, but at that moment Jerry Cotton arrives and arrests the accomplices. However, Larry overhears everything over the radio and now wants to blow up the Pennsylvania Express with the Nitro because of the failed money transfer. Jerry Cotton succeeds in preventing this, too. In doing so, he kills Larry Link. The FBI countdown clock stops at 0:07 minutes.

When Jerry then wants to take his well-deserved vacation, he is previously called off by Mr. High for the next job.

  • Lexicon of international film : “Despite weaknesses in the production, a reasonably exciting agent's adventure about the popular penny-pound figure. Full of improbabilities, but skillful in the modification of the usual agent movie clichés. "
  • Evangelical film observer : "A little better than its predecessor, but still only moderately exciting series thriller, which suffers from improbabilities and creative inadequacies."
