action

In the circus world of the early German post-war period. The trapeze artists Bimbo and Marianne Tagore, who are the stars of this ring, perform under the large tent of the Williams circus. Your sensational number attracts many visitors every evening. The couple also have a little daughter, Monika. Also involved in the trapeze act is Bimbo's envious half-brother Kovacz, who has to take care of the secure technical processes of the act. Kovacz would like to be the star of the ring himself and it annoys him very much that he is clearly in the shadow of Bimbo. He also secretly desires his wife. His envy and resentment lead to carelessness.

One evening this delicate constellation caused a fatal incident in the midst of the performance: Since the jumping net is not in the proper condition, Marianne supports the fall in front of her husband and the audience and hits hard. Shortly afterwards, she succumbs to her injuries. First of all, Bimbo is blamed for the accident, and he even has to answer in court for Kovacz's negligence. Even the subsequent acquittal does not remove the self-imposed blame.

Bimbo becomes depressed and starts to drink. For the little daughter, however, he remains the caring and loving father. One day Monika's aunt, Marianne's sister Mrs. Bornemann, tries to take custody of the underage girl from Bimbo. It will be Bimbo's biggest fight. At the same time a new artist arrives at the Williams circus, the tamer Yvonne. She falls in love with Bimbo. The young woman gives him hope and wants to free the desperate widower from his self-isolation. With her as the new trapeze partner, he finally sees the opportunity to present his old success number again.
