Willy Winterstein

Willy Winterstein , also Willi Winterstein (born February 22, 1895 as Wilhelm Moritz Winterstein in Leitmeritz , Bohemia ; † July 4, 1965 in Handeloh -Wörme near Hamburg ) was an Austro-German cameraman .

Live and act

After secondary school, Winterstein completed an apprenticeship in photography at the graphic teaching and research institute in Vienna. In 1912 he worked for six months for the French film company Pathé frères in Paris, then for the newsreel in Vienna.

In 1914 Winterstein came to Berlin, where he made his first experience in feature films. From 1916 he served as a war correspondent. After the war he finally embarked on a career as a cameraman and worked first in Vienna and from 1927 in Berlin. In 1930/31 he took the two films Dreyfus and Fascination in London .

In the 1930s and 1940s, Winterstein was the busiest cameraman in the German film industry. In addition to feature films, he also made numerous short films. His first color film Die Fledermaus could only be finished by DEFA after the end of the war . In the 1950s he mainly worked for real film . His daughter Elisabeth became known as a still photographer under the name Lilo Winterstein . The Winterstein family grave is in the cemetery in Handeloh .
