action

Jansen, who works in the port of Hamburg, is a gnarled, sinewy, careworn guy. Eighteen years ago, he cast his son Klaas away after catching him stealing. Now he's been waiting for his return for a long time and has become a sad old man over this time, who tries to forget his grief in the Baltimore bar. An equally cunning and unscrupulous gang of thieves under the leadership of the slippery and ice-cold Bulli is planning to get to the bulging stores with valuable general cargo. But to do this, the gang first has to outsmart old Jansen. Knowing about Jansen's emotional weak point, the gangsters are looking for a fake Klaas to play the role of the son who is returning home after 18 years and to wrap Father Jansen around his finger.

In their eyes, the lighting technician Heinrich Osthaus is particularly suitable for this role, who bears a great resemblance to the prodigal son, especially since the crooks rely on the fact that after 18 years of absence, the real son, now 32 years old, may have changed visually . But Heinrich, who, as a wanted murder suspect, initially declares himself ready to participate in the villainy because of new papers and thus a new identity, have scruples due to the friendliness of father Jansen and his daughter Inge. Things come to a head when Osthaus finally gets out and wants to protect the Jansens from the gang of thieves.

Exactly at this point in time, the real Klaas Jansen appears again, who ended up in the hospital after a bar fight he instigated. The real and the fake son team up and can ultimately eliminate the crooks who want to rob the memory and accidentally set it on fire. Together they also save old Jansen's life. Jansen has his long-lost son back and the wrong son and Jansen's daughter Inge want to go through life together from now on.

Reviews

In Spiegel 36/1949 it was read: “This harbor melody is a potpourri in which a lot occurs: father's love, son's defiance, gang rascality and manliness, noise in the boom of sailors and lantern procession of children, knife stabbing, burglary and fire, love, happiness, renunciation of police and fire brigade . In the end, a pair of lovers and a rediscovered son, with their father in their arms, claim the rogue-cleared field. A chansoness remains abandoned (...) Screenwriter Arthur A. Kuhnert has organized it all diligently and neatly interlinked, and Hans Müller set it going, smoking a huge number of cigars while directing, in front of a real-looking background. But the construction does not come to life, Paul Henckels, Wolfgang Lukschy, Kirsten Heiberg, Arno Assman, Heinz Engelmann and everyone else may play, sing, demolish, box as well as they can. "

"The films ' The Friends of My Wife ', 'Hafenmelodie' and ' Derby ', which premiered in the evening , belong to the common middle genre of film production and do not require any arguments."

"Crime rarity with atmospheric milieu drawing of the Hamburg harbor area."

"Striving for psychological differentiation, captivatingly staged and well played."
