Herbert Kirchhoff (born May 5, 1911 in Braunschweig , † September 24, 1988 in Malcesine , Italy ) was a German set designer for the stage, film and television.

Live and act

Kirchhoff studied medicine and art history . From 1932 he continued his education at the Berlin Art Academy . From 1934 he worked as a set designer at the municipal theaters in Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf and at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg . Five years later Kirchhoff began studying film architecture at the German Film Academy in Potsdam-Babelsberg . In the early 1940s he continued his activities as a production designer on German theaters.

Shortly before the end of World War II , he became a film architect . After a short break after the end of the war, where he again designed sets for stages, Helmut Käutner brought him back to film at the end of 1946. Kirchhoff moved to Hamburg, where from then on he preferred to work for the real films of producers Gyula Trebitsch and Walter Koppel . Kirchhoff mainly created a number of revue films, but also several realistic and contemporary films. Until 1960 he was also regularly used for Käutner's productions. From 1963 he concentrated on the design of television productions. There he designed the designs for operas and operettas as well as for everyday stories and historical documentary plays.

During his time in Hamburg, Kirchhoff repeatedly returned to the stage and designed the sets for productions created under the directorship of Gustaf Gründgens and Rolf Liebermann ( Hamburg State Opera ). Herbert Kirchhoff, who withdrew into private life at the age of 75, spent the last phase of his life on Lake Garda in Italy.
