occupation

Columbus discovered backwater is a German film comedy from the year 1954. Directed by Ulrich Erfurth and Alexander Paal play Charles Chaplin's sons Sydney Chaplin and Charlie Chaplin jr. the main roles as two former GIs who fell in love with German “Frolleins” ( Paola Löw and Eva Kerbler ) who want to Americanize a small, German provincial town with their cocky business ideas.

action

Clark and Jimmy Hunter are two American brothers who spent their military service together in Germany. There they fell in love not only with the country, but also with the pretty young locals Susi Merzheim and Eva Wagner. Now the two men want to return to the tranquil town of Krähwinkel with their luggage: a “grandiose” business idea. A “prodigal son” is just being welcomed into the sleepy half-timbered nest, Toni Wagner, son of the local pharmacist, who has returned from America. Toni first contacts Susi, his old love, and asks her about Clark Hunter to find out the state of affairs between the two. The two Hunter brothers, who have just returned to Germany from the USA, burst into the celebration in Toni's honor. Toni is not very pleased that Susi suddenly only has eyes for the brisk Clark and then has to take off the suit designed by Schneider Lüttgen for Clark, which Toni wears for this festival.

Clark announces that he has big business plans for Krähwinkel: the modern age should come! A huge open-air and drive-in cinema is planned, a huge self-service department store, a gigantic hotel with a helicopter landing pad and, to top it off, a gigantic motorway with its own gas stations that can cover the entire historic old town. Clark brought the equipment for a drugstore with him. The American would like to crown the architectural megalomania with the slogan: “The young American heart in old Europe”. Mayor Meier already senses big business and serves the two US boys with the odd junk dealer Wiebel as an official partner, since Americans are not allowed to do business in Germany without further ado. The drugstore will soon be open and the Krähwinklers will initially gladly accept it, only the older residents are a little unfamiliar with American modernism.

But soon the residents return to the old routine, and the Hunters have their problems with enforcing the “American way of life” in Krähwinkel: The two impatient Hunters can hardly do anything against the habits they have grown fond of. Unfortunately for Clark, Toni Wagner also succeeds Mayor Meier. His voters expect nothing less from him than that he undo the changes in the cityscape since the arrival of the Hunters. But Toni proves to be fair to his rival Clark and approves his business proposals. But he no longer sees a future for himself and his ideas in Krähwinkel and decides to accept the offer from Florence, his sister Olive's French friend, and to go with her to Paris, where they are much more open to new ideas, as Florence assures. Before he disappears into the big wide world with her in the sports car, Toni and Susi and Jimmy and Eva have a double wedding in the Krähwinkler Church.

Reviews

"Based on a script by Axel von Ambesser", Alexander Paal and Ulrich Erfurth staged a somewhat jerky and cumbersome, but at times also funny instruction for the messengers of America: The German crowing in their half-timbered houses do not want streamlined buildings and prefer a cozy café to the drugstore . The ensemble: two original Chaplin sons, a group of German jokers and mind specialists and four particularly pretty and particularly young up-and-coming ladies. "

- Der Spiegel from September 15, 1954

Paimann's film lists summed up: "Here the occupation conflict was reversed, which idea is then not implemented consistently and too rambling."

"A comedy that is both popular and critical of time, which, despite the commitment of two Chaplin sons, did not fulfill the hopes raised by the topic."
