Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. (born May 5, 1925 in Beverly Hills , USA , † March 20, 1968 in Hollywood , USA ) was an American actor and the first child of Charles Chaplin and Lita Gray .

Life and family

In addition to his biological brother Sydney Chaplin (1926–2009), he had eight half-siblings from his father's fourth marriage to Oona O'Neill in 1943 : Geraldine Chaplin (* 1944), Michael Chaplin (* 1946), Josephine Hannah Chaplin (* 1949) , Victoria Chaplin (* 1951), Eugene Chaplin (* 1953), Jane Chaplin (* 1957), Anette Chaplin (* 1959) and Christopher Chaplin (* 1962).

In the late 1940s, he had a brief relationship with Norma Jeane Mortensen, who made a career as Marilyn Monroe shortly after the breakup and is now one of the greatest film icons of the 20th century. In 1958 he married the actress Susan Magness (* 1936), their daughter Susan Maree Chaplin was born in May 1959. The marriage ended in divorce in November of the same year.

In 1952, Chaplin made his film debut alongside his father in the limelight . After playing mostly supporting roles in another twelve productions, he withdrew from film in 1960. During his time in the military, he developed a drinking problem.

Charles Chaplin Jr. died on March 20, 1968 at his mother's house, Lita Gray, of a thrombosis that developed as a result of a negligently cared for injury that Charles sustained in a fall.

He published the memories of his father Charles Chaplin in his 1961 book My Father Charlie Chaplin .
