The Band-e-Sultan Dam is a 1000 year old dam in Afghanistan . It hit the international headlines when a dam broke on March 29, 2005, in which at least six, maybe eight people were killed.

The dam is located in the southeastern province of Ghazni near the town of the same name Ghazni . It was built in the 11th century by Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi, is used for water supply and is said to be the oldest and largest dam in Afghanistan. The stowage volume is several million cubic meters.

In March 2005 there was heavy snow and rain that led to flooding. The amount of water in the reservoir increased so much that the dam broke on the night of Monday, March 28th to Tuesday, March 29th. The tidal wave reached as far as the city of Ghazni, 30 km further south. Several thousand hectares were under water. 70 houses were destroyed, as well as the Poli Borje Barq Bridge in Ghazni and two other smaller bridges above the city.

The dam was rebuilt. In May 2006 the reconstruction was almost finished.

In 2013, the dam will allow around 15,000 hectares of land to be irrigated and should enable 50,000 families to generate electricity in the future.
