Michael Jary (born September 24, 1906 in Laurahütte near Kattowitz ; † July 12, 1988 in Munich ; actually Maximilian Michael Andreas Jarczyk ) was a German composer .

life and work

Jary's father was a foreman in the Königshütte, his mother a seamstress. His brother Herbert Jarczyk became known as a film and television composer. As a child, Maximilian wanted to become a missionary, so he spent his school days in the monastery of the Steyler missionaries near Neisse . It was there that he discovered his love for music. With 18 years Jary left the monastery and attended the conservatory in Bytom . He directed a church and workers' choir and wrote the first chamber music works that the Gleiwitz station broadcast. The city theater of Neisse and Plauen finally hired him as the second conductor .

In 1929 Jary was accepted into the Berlin State Music Academy ; he studied with Franz Schreker , Paul Hindemith , Arnold Schönberg and Igor Stravinsky . He also worked as a pianist in cafes and cinemas. In 1931 he was awarded the Beethoven Prize of the City of Berlin. At the university's final concert on February 8, 1933, he conducted his concert for two pianos, trumpet and trombone and was booed by members of the Kampfbund für deutsche Kultur . Paul Graener , the new director of the Stern Conservatory , vilified the work as a “cultural Bolshevik music stammer of a Polish Jew”.

Jarczyk had to go into hiding until the matter grew on it. He wrote arrangements under the pseudonyms Jackie Leeds and chansons under Max Jantzen . When he signed his first film deal, he was reminded that he couldn't make a career with a Polish-sounding name. A friend then deleted three consonants from the surname and chose his middle name: Michael Jary was born. Symphonic background music was his domain; In 1936 he composed his first film music for the film The Big and Small World, based on a novel by Honoré de Balzacs in 1936 .

Also Swing -Arrangements and Jazz were despite the government diktat to his repertoire. He founded the Michael Jary Chamber Dance Orchestra, a pure studio orchestra that has never performed publicly, but has made a big name for itself. Shortly before the end of the war, Jary founded a new chapel. With this foundation (and reinforced by musicians from other orchestras, for example from Charlie and His Orchestra ) on behalf of the Soviet control officers with the 48-man Radio Berlin Dance Orchestra (RBT-Orchester), he was able to already nineteen days after the surrender (May 8, 1945) occur. He hired Ilse Werner and Bully Buhlan as soloists for the radio broadcasts . In November 1948 he gave the singer Zarah Leander a successful comeback in Germany with two concerts in Saarbrücken (November 13th and 14th, 1948). The frequently rumored claim that Jary founded the Radio Saarbrücken dance orchestra in 1947 is incorrect, since Radio Saarbrücken had had its own dance orchestra under the direction of Heinz Gebhardt since the spring of 1946. In 1948 he founded his own publishing house, Michael Jary-Produktion, which even had an office in New York in the 1950s . In 1949 "Mäcki", as his friends called him, went to Hamburg . More successful films and hits follow. Songs like Leise rustles on the Missouri , Only Dolores ' legs do that, Mäcki-Boogie , Today there is something in the air and many others are now standard works of popular music. After this success, Jary found his way back to his roots. He wrote the musical Nicole , which premiered in Nuremberg in 1963 and was later performed in Poland. He wrote symphonic works in his adopted Swiss home above Lake Lugano . In 1973 he suffered three heart attacks .

Michael Jary was married to the mannequin Christiana for the second time and is the father of the writer Micaela Jary .
He died on July 12, 1988 in Munich. His grave is in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg at the Jarczyk family grave,
grid square M 17 (south of Cordesallee, east of Ringstrasse ).
