action

"Beloved treasure" - these two words almost trigger a catastrophe in three marriages, which leads straight to the divorce court. This and much more is written in a love letter, which in turn spreads quarrels and distrust in couple relationships and makes wives doubt whether their own spouse is possibly cheating. The whole trouble starts with Lotte Eilers, the somewhat spoiled and rebellious pretty and teenage daughter of Felix Eilers. He's celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary today with Lotte's stepmother Eva Eilers, his second wife. Lotte has been sent home by the teacher because the aforementioned passionate love letter was found on her. The pedellist Kielreiter, whom nobody at the school takes very seriously and who is therefore only called "little worm" by everyone, is sent to the Eilers' to speak a word of power with Lotte's parents. There is a threat of expulsion from school. Lotte is lucky in misery, neither her father nor her stepmother are at home. And so the school girl unceremoniously puts pressure on her governess Fraulein Traute to play her mother if "little worms" appear. The parents should not find out about the school anger.

When the parents are back home, the unsuspecting Eva finds the letter Lotte dropped on the floor and picks it up. Startled, she reads the lines and confronts her husband Felix. Felix reacts a little confused, so that the suspicion grows in Eva that her own husband is unfaithful. He couldn't think of anything better than to claim that this incriminated letter could belong to his colleague Hoegner. Eva is pissed off and calls her mother, who promptly files for divorce for her daughter. In order to avoid a public scandal, the social reception held in the evening on the occasion of the wedding day will not be canceled. Meanwhile, Felix tries to save what can be saved. He asks Hoegner to help him and to assert to Eva that the letter is actually his. Since Hoegner is unable to work, another colleague, Mr. Reimann, steps in. He actually claims to Eva that he is not only Mr. Hoegner, but also the one addressed in the letter. Just bad luck that a little later the real Hoegner also appears at Eva and claims the same thing. Hoegner knew nothing of Felix's short-term change of arrangement with Reimann, and so the disaster is perfect.

Eva's mother, Ms. Wittich, a gossip-addict, notorious “shameful” and mother-in-law's nightmare, insists on it and also informs Ms. Hoegner and Ms. Reimann of the letter, so that they must assume that their own husbands have cheated on them too. Three divorces were filed promptly in a very short time. Attorney Dr. Kuhnert, who is in charge of the divorces, finds it quite right that it is clearly going too far to file for divorces on the basis of a single, silly love letter. After a few more tangles, the truth emerges. The letter was once in Eva's desk, from where Lotte had taken it one day. She read the contents curiously and took the letter with her to school. The addressed "beloved treasure" was none other than Eva's father, and it was written by the wicked disgraceful woman, Ms. Wittich, Eva's mother!
