action
Aline Deshuges became a widow far too early. Since then she has only lived for her daughter, the now 14-year-old Madeleine. On the advice of her friend Clarisse Peronne, Aline gives Madeleine a boarding school. As a next step, Clarisse ensures that her friend in the Peronne house meets the surgeon Professor Lenoire. The engagement to him is not long in coming.
The professor sends his bride to the painter Raymond Montandon to have her portrayed by him. Aline falls in love with the artist. But it doesn't take long before she realizes that he is an Luftikus and only lives for the moment. In a rage, she runs out onto the street, where she is hit by a car and seriously injured and hospitalized. Professor Lenoire goes to great lengths to keep Aline alive, but cannot save her.
When Raymond learns of Aline's death, his conscience stirs for the first time in his life. Now he wants to make amends for Madeleine, who has to suffer most from the death of her mother. He takes her into his house and takes care of the girl. The longer Madeleine lives with the painter, the less they can hide their feelings for each other. After all, Raymond thinks it would be best if they split up - initially for two years. Should they still desire it, it should be wedding.
After the separation period, Madeleine stands in front of the painter's door again and makes a deep impression on him. In the last two years - she is 17 years old now - she has developed into a perfectly formed lady and reminds Raymond of his marriage vows.
In the course of time, Raymond begins to fear the duration of his great fortune. Finally he confesses to Madeleine his complicity in the death of her mother. After this confession, he believes that it is all over now. Therefore he secretly leaves Madeleine. But she drives after him. When she finds him, they both realize that their love is stronger than the shadow of the past.
Production notes
The film was produced in the Berlin-Tempelhof studio. The outdoor shots were taken in Berlin-Tegel and on Lake Lugano .
The FSK working committee was of the opinion that the film gave the youngsters a false image of love and only released it for adults. A scene in which 14-year-old Mad confesses her love for the older man to a priest was completely removed at the request of the church representative after a unanimous decision, as it clearly offends the religious feeling for Catholic circles.
criticism
The lexicon of international films laconically notes that the strip is a German film made-up from the 1950s, but also emphasizes that the then 27-year-old Sonja Ziemann temporarily had to play a 14-year-old.
