action

Karl Odewig and Peter Gelius work as demolition specialists at a company that is responsible for tracking down duds from the Second World War and rendering them harmless in the Lüneburg Heath area . Karl's mother has often tried to dissuade her son from the dangerous but well-paid job, but he wants to continue working with his friend Peter. The daring Peter was not least his aviator in the war. Karl invites Peter to spend a few days' vacation with him in his hometown Garstädt. Here he introduces him to his fiancée Helga and Peter falls in love with her. Even Helga has to admit that he doesn't leave her indifferent. Meanwhile, Karl looks for a way to comply with his mother's requests. He finds a gas station for sale that he could run with Peter. But then something happens that throws all plans upside down. In a particularly romantic mood, Helga and Peter give in to their feelings and sleep together. Although Helga wants to tell Karl immediately what happened, she is prevented by Peter, who does not want to take the friend's wife. Instead, he rushed off and went to a casino in Travemünde to distract himself . When he made the acquaintance of the Argentine consul in Hamburg here, he made the decision to emigrate there. Consul Berghaus wants to help him with this.

Before he finally leaves, Peter drives back to Garstädt again. He wants to give Karl the money he won in the casino so that he can realize his dream of the gas station. On the same evening there is a fire brigade festival in Garstädt and Helga confesses to Karl that she loves someone else. When Helga and Peter talk about their feelings a little later, Karl involuntarily witnesses this debate. When he finds out that Peter wants to emigrate, his deep disappointment turns into a feeling of bitterness.

When Karl and Peter get a new job from their employer, they have to do it together. In Celle , a highly dangerous unexploded ordnance has been discovered; the defusing of a similar bomb recently killed a mutual friend. Peter works directly on the detonator of the bomb and is dependent on Karl's instructions over the field telephone . The friend consciously gives him a wrong instruction, which could mean Peter's death, but corrects himself immediately afterwards. Peter remains unharmed, but later discovers in the documents that Karl consciously endangered him. He still does not report Karl.

After Karl has finally spoken to Helga, he gets another job from his company. A bomb has to be defused in Braunschweig and Karl asks Peter to work with him one last time, as he cannot cope with this dangerous task alone. The evening before the dismantling , Peter learns from Karl's mother that Helga is expecting a child from him. Peter realizes that he finally has to talk to his friend. Since there is no more opportunity before her risky task, he wants to do it immediately afterwards. The friends manage to recover the bomb. They bring her out of town in a truck. Shortly before their destination, however, it detonates , with Karl being seriously injured. Lying in the hospital, he knows that he will not live long. He speaks to Peter and assures his friend that he is glad that Helga is not left alone. He knew she was in good hands with him.

When the Heath dreams in the evening is one of the traditional Heimatfilms, which are set between 1947 and 1977. Film scholars and critics regard Heimatfilm as a typical German-Austrian genre and also as a kind of “German-Austrian Western”, as it is the only film genre that Germany and Austria have produced and that does not exist outside of the two countries .

For Margot Trooger and Rudolf Prack it was the second collaboration after the feature film Lockende Sterne , which had just hit the cinemas on December 5, 1952.

The title song When the Heath dreams in the evening comes from Walter Jäger (melody) and Ernst Nebhut (text). Willy Schneider , who also sings it in this film, created the most famous version.

The film is currently only available as a video cassette, published in the Bild am Sonntag series “Heimat”.

criticism

"A shallow entertainment film about love, friendship and professional ethics that successfully avoids deepening its problems."

“Dramatic homeland film about two fellow aviators from the Second World War and inseparable friends who work as demolition experts in the Lüneburg Heath after the war and clear mines and defuse duds there together. Their friendship is put to the test when Peter meets Karl's fiancée and falls in love with her. On a last joint assignment, Karl is fatally injured in an explosion. During a final discussion the friends reconciled, and the dying Karl realizes that his girl is in good hands with Peter. "
