Victor Arthur Edward Janson (also Viktor Janson ; born September 12 . Jul / 24. September  1884 greg. In Riga , Russian Empire ; † 28. June 1960 in Berlin-Schmargendorf ) was a German actor and director .

Life

After taking acting and singing lessons, Janson came to Berlin at the age of 17, where he received further acting training. His first permanent engagement was in 1904 at the court theater in Detmold . In 1905 he played in Libau , in 1906 in Neisse and in 1908 in Opole , where he also directed for the first time.

In 1909 he came to the New Operetta Theater in Berlin. As a comic character actor, he was particularly active in the following years at the Central and Residenztheater. He came to South America as part of an operetta tour.

From 1913 he acted in silent films . From 1918 he began to work as a director himself, but still remained an actor. Subsequently, he played under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch in Carmen (1918), Die Ausernprinzessin (1919) and Die Bergkatze (1921).

His silent films as a director include Der Mann der Tat (1919), Pigtail and Sword - A Great Princess (1926), Vienna, You City of My Dreams (1927) and It Whispers the Night (1929). In talkies , Victor Janson continued to be used as an actor - primarily in comic roles - especially from the late 1930s to the 1950s, when he stopped working as a director.

Victor Janson continued to direct until 1939; His productions included films such as The Woman We Talked About (1931), The Blue From Heaven (1932), You and the Three (1935), Girl in White (1936) and Who Kisses Madeleine (1939).

In the early 1950s he acted as a German voice actor for a few American films, including Disney's Alice in Wonderland . Until well into the 1950s he was on the Berlin stages, especially at the Schlossparktheater and Schiller Theater .

Since October 29, 1920 Janson was married to the singer Helene Landt-Merviola, who performed under the name Helene Merviola .

Janson was buried in the Wilmersdorf cemetery.
