The engineer Peter Shield comes after several years in South America on holiday to Germany to his uncle Schlee man (who must, unfortunately, at the same time take care of the ill-bred children of his traveling abroad landlady). During a joint visit to the coffee shop , he tells his uncle that he is financially bad and that he hopes to be able to sell an invention for a profit during his four-week stay. His uncle gets him a job as a detective . During the conversation Peter falls in love with the dancer Isolde. By tapping a phone call in a telephone booth , he learns the address where Isolde lives with her friend and how he can gain access to the apartment.

Equipped with flowers and wine, he visits Isolde in the evening and pretends to be the friend of her roommate. Although Isolde is actually waiting for her boyfriend, the boxer Lemke, she is not dismissed from Peter and offers him the food prepared for her boyfriend, which he spills, which is why he takes off his suit . In the meantime, however, the boxer arrives and forces Peter to flee.

In the respected Pernrieder family, Clarissa, who has never had to work to earn a living, wants to marry the unemployed actor Cyrus Kracker, which her parents Justus and Klara Pernrieder dislike, which is why they want their daughter to be shadowed. Peter, who has just started his work at the Nordboden detective agency, is entrusted with this assignment.

Inexperienced in shadowing, Peter is soon confronted by Cyrus about why he makes his girlfriend look beautiful. Peter reveals himself to Cyrus as a detective. However, the two men get along very well the first time they meet and Cyrus invites him to a skat evening with his girlfriend Clarissa. On this occasion Peter tells him about his mishap with Isolde and asks Cyrus to receive the suit that he left him in Isolde's apartment. During the evening, Peter falls in love with Clarissa.

When Cyrus Isolde day it seeks to recognize him as one of the extras of a former joint appearance again and said he could give him a role as turn her boyfriend arrives Lemke. However, in his attempt to massacre Cyrus, he injures himself.

When Cyrus informs Peter of his feelings towards Isolde, he is very pleased because he no longer has to hold back with his feelings towards Clarissa. When he tells Clarissa about the children (Hansi and Mariele) that he has to take care of, she suggests that they help him.

Peter delivers the report of his observation to Clarissa's father, who has doubts about the detective's work due to the vague statements. When confronted, Peter admits that he is new to this job and that he is, in fact, an engineer and hopes to be able to market his invention. Justus Pernrieder asks him to give him his plans so that he can inspect them and invites him to dinner .

In the afternoon, Peter and Clarissa meet at Peter's uncle's apartment to look after the children. However, Peter has to leave soon to deliver the plans. The uncle, who has arrived in the meantime, thinks Clarissa is a domestic help and orders her to do household chores.

Meanwhile, Cyrus starts another attempt to pick up Peter's suit from Isolde, but gets into a confrontation with her boyfriend again, goes out in his favor and he gets the suit back.

When Peter returns to his uncle, he is appalled at the fact that he forced his love for household chores. But he has no choice but to leave for dinner with Clarissa's father. In the house of the Pernrieders, Justus Pernrieder explains to him that Peter's invention has long been protected by a German patent . But he introduces Peter as a millionaire to the befriended and wealthy Hoopoe couple , while Klara Pernrieder can impress with his sophisticated manners.

When Clarissa returns, exhausted from her hard work at Peter's uncle, she is surprised to find Peter stealing secretly into her room, where they both admit their love. When her mother checks on her, she tells her they broke up with Cyrus. Klara, who takes a liking to the young man, wants to attract Clarissa as a husband. Peter and Clarissa arrange to meet for the next morning. When Peter sneaks out of Clarissa's room, he meets her father, to whom he admits his love for his daughter. Justus Pernrieder is horrified, but wants to save face and continue the community evening, during which his wife Peter invites further visits.

A little later, Peter and Clarissa go on a secret weekend trip. When their car breaks down, they go to a country inn , where they enter themselves in the guest book as Mr and Mrs Kracker. Peter finally confesses to Clarissa that he staged the mishap and Clarissa claims to have known this. The Hoopoes, who are friends with the Pernrieders, stay at the same inn and see the entry in the guest book.

Justus and Klara, who find out about their daughter's supposed excursion with Cyrus, are beside themselves, which leads to Justus even slapping his daughter in the face . They fear that no respectable man will be interested in Clarissa now. When Peter appears, they literally force him to marry. Peter agrees happily, Clarissa is enthusiastic and only now do the parents suspect that they have never learned the whole truth.
