Hans Schweikart (born October 1, 1895 in Berlin , † December 1, 1975 in Munich ) was a German director and actor who, as an occasional writer, also carried the pseudonym Ole Stefani .

Life

Schweikart was the son of deaf parents. After finishing the Schiller-Realgymnasium he became a drama student at the Marie-Seebach-School of the Royal Theater in Berlin with the help of a scholarship . Since 1915 he played in theaters in Wiesbaden , Görlitz , Magdeburg and Cologne before he came back to the capital. After the First World War he became a member of the Max Reinhardt German Theater . Here he met his first wife, the Jewish actress Käthe Nevill .

In 1923 he moved to the Munich Kammerspiele from artistic director Otto Falckenberg and also directed for the first time . Schweikart stayed at the Kammerspiele until 1934 and then became senior director at the Munich Residenztheater . He became a supporting member of the SS . In 1938 Bavaria Film brought him as a director and from that year he also made films. He tried to escape the political pressure and the influence of the National Socialists on his work by resigning from Bavaria in 1942 , but made a few smaller films for UFA until shortly before the end of the war .

After the Second World War he took over the Münchner Kammerspiele from artistic director Erich Engel in 1947 and directed it until 1963. During this time he brought Fritz Kortner to the theater, who staged twelve plays under Schweikart's artistic director. In addition to his directorial work, Schweikart also directed the Otto Falckenberg School . Even after his position as director, Schweikart worked as a freelance director on various stages in Germany and abroad until his death. Schweikart was married three times and had two sons.

Schweikart died in Munich in 1975 at the age of 80. The grave is located in the Bogenhausen cemetery (grave no. 1-7-2). A street was named after him in the Ramersdorf-Perlach district of Munich .
