Frank Baumbauer (born September 2, 1945 in Munich ) is a German theater manager, director and artistic director .

Life

Baumbauer was born as the son of a businessman and the acting agent Erna Baumbauer . After graduating from school, he studied German , sociology and theater studies at the University of Munich .

Baumbauer was assistant director at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus from 1970 to 1972 and then switched to the Bavarian State Theater , where he worked as assistant director from 1972 to 1974. Director there since 1974, he was head of the artistic office from 1975, from 1980 he was also a personal assistant to the artistic director Kurt Meisel and in 1983 he advanced to the theater director .

In this function he engaged authors and directors such as Herbert Achternbusch , Werner Schroeter and the cabaret artist Gerhard Polt and defended them against attacks. He resigned in 1986 after the CSU sharply attacked Josef Bierbichler's political improvisations .

Baumbauer was deputy director Ivan Nagel at the Stuttgarter Schauspiel in 1986/87 and director of the Basel theater from 1988 to 1993 . There he engaged directors such as Christoph Marthaler , Jossi Wieler , Achim Freyer , Herbert Wernicke and Hans Hollmann .

Due to the given financial and personal possibilities, he did not extend his contract beyond the 1992/93 season, but instead succeeded Michael Bogdanov as director of the Hamburger Schauspielhaus in 1993, courted by three cities . In this role he relied on a permanent ensemble and cooperation with influential authors such as Elfriede Jelinek and Rainald Goetz . The directors he has hired included Anselm Weber , Matthias Hartmann , Karin Beier , Frank Castorf , Johann Kresnik , Christoph Schlingensief and Thomas Ostermeier . During Baumbauer's seven-year management, the Hamburger Schauspielhaus became a venue for high-risk contemporary theater and new forms of theater. In its era, the Hamburger Schauspielhaus was voted Theater of the Year in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2000 by the magazine Theater heute .

Despite the offered contract extension, Baumbauer signed a contract as a consultant for the Salzburg Festival's drama program in 1999 . From 2001 to summer 2009 he was the successor to Dieter Dorn, director of the Münchner Kammerspiele . As head of the Bavarian Drama Theater he is a member of the Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation .

He is married to the actress Gundi Ellert .

Awards

In April 2010 he received the Cultural Prize of Honor of the City of Munich in 2009.
