Anselm Weber
Anselm Weber (* 1963 in Munich ) is a German theater and opera director and artistic director .
Life
Anselm Weber began studying photography at the State Academy for Photo Design in 1984 , and then studied German, philosophy and English in Berlin. His children's film The Adventures of Tobias Screw (1986) was shown at the Berlinale Children's Film Festival in 1987 . 1986 to 1989 he was assistant director at the Münchner Kammerspiele with Dieter Dorn and Hans Lietzau. In 1989, he staged there The underachiever by Peter Turrini in the workroom.
He then worked as a freelance director in Bonn at the theater there and in Berlin at the Deutsches Theater. In 1991 he started as in-house director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt , where he worked on, among others, The Maiden of Orléans (F. Schiller), Antigone (Sophocles) and the world premiere of The Presidents (W. Schwab). In 1993 he moved to the Deutsche Schauspielhaus Hamburg, where he also worked as in-house director under the artistic director Frank Baumbauer until 2000. During the opening he staged the world premiere of Critique in Fortress (R. Goetz). This was followed by productions by Zerbombt (DE by Sarah Kane), Katzelmacher (RW Fassbinder) and Nathan / Jude von Malta (Lessing / Marlowe), among others .
During this time he was also a guest lecturer at the University of Hamburg for the drama directing course. At the same time, he staged at the Residenztheater in Munich (including Wallenstein by F. Schiller and Don Juan and Faust by C. Grabbe) and in Vienna at the Vienna Volkstheater (including the DE from Blut by S. Belbel) and at the Burgtheater (including the DE from The Pillow Man) by M. McDonagh).
In 1999 he made his debut as an opera director at the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen with Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto . A close collaboration developed with the conductor Stefan Soltesz, who in the following years worked together on Lohengrin (2000) and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (2003) by R. Wagner and Der Rosenkavalier (2004) by R. Strauss.
From 2001 to 2003, Anselm Weber was senior theater director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt before he was director of the Schauspiel Essen from 2005 to 2010. There he particularly promoted young directors such as David Bösch and Roger Vontobel . At the same time he has been working as an opera director at the Frankfurt Opera since 2004 (including Katja Kabanowa by L. Janáček, Die Tote Stadt by EW Korngold). Together with Roberto Ciulli he was artistic director of the Theater der Welt festival 2010.
In the same year he moved to the Schauspielhaus Bochum as artistic director . There he staged world premieres by C. Nussbaumeder, Reto Finger and Lutz Hübner. In 2015 he staged The Passenger by M. Weinberg at the Frankfurt Opera . The work was invited to the Wiener Festwochen in 2016. Anselm Weber has been a member of the executive committee of the German Academy of Performing Arts since March 2016.
In the 2017/2018 season, he succeeded Oliver Reese as artistic director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt and, together with Bernd Loebe, took over the management of the Städtische Bühnen Frankfurt . At the beginning of his time in Frankfurt, Weber and his deputy Marion Tiedtke announced that they would be working with directors younger than Reese such as David Bösch , Roger Vontobel and Robert Borgmann . At the same time, he demanded a consensus from Frankfurt politicians when deciding on the upcoming renovation of the municipal theaters, which, according to an expert report, will cost more than 800 million euros. This dimension has sparked controversial debates about the value of theater compared to other public functions. “The discussion can be incredibly dangerous. It can be used by populists from left and right to pose the question of the existence of theater. That mustn't happen, ”said Weber.
