Sergi Belbel i Coslado (born May 29, 1963 in Terrassa ) is a Catalan writer , director and translator . He is one of the most important contemporary dramatists in Spain and has been the artistic director of the National Theater in Barcelona since 2005 .

Life

Belbel studied Romance Philology at the University of Barcelona , and from 1986 gained theater experience at the Teatro Fronterzio in Madrid . His first play was premiered in Gijón that same year . He has worked as a director since 1988, often staging performances of his texts himself, but also has a teaching position at the Barcelona Theater Institute . Caresses ( Carícies ), ten scenes of love and loss of communication, in 1992 an international breakthrough theaters throughout Europe suddenly interested in Belbel. After the rain ( Després de la pluja ) and A moment before dying ( Morir ) from 1994, which premiered in 1993, were also great successes, in 1996 Belbel received the Spanish National Prize for Dramatic Literature . In addition to his pieces, translations into Catalan by Jean Racine , Samuel Beckett and Bernard-Marie Koltès have also appeared . Belbel has been working as a screenwriter for Spanish television since 1995, but sometimes also as a director .
