Bernard-Marie Koltès

Bernard-Marie Koltès (born April 9, 1948 in Metz , † April 15, 1989 in Paris ) was a French author , director and playwright .

Life

Bernard-Marie Koltès was born in 1948 as the son of an officer of the Metz Fortress . Koltès received a directorial training at the theater school of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and then worked as a director and author for theater and radio.

In the 1970s, Koltès began writing for the theater and spent a long time abroad. His breakthrough as a dramatist had Koltès 1976 with the Festival of Avignon premiered monologue "The night just before the forests".

In 1983 Patrice Chéreau opened his Théâtre des Amandiers in Paris- Nanterre with “Battle of the Negro and the Dogs” and subsequently staged all of the author's plays. From 1986 to 1990 premieres followed at annual intervals on European stages.

In 1989, Bernard-Marie Koltès died at the age of 41 from complications from AIDS .

About Koltès

Procès ivre

The motif for this piece comes from Raskolnikov, the main character in Dostoyevsky's novel Guilt and Atonement . For this murderer, the old usurer is no better than a louse. He kills them in order to survive, without feeling guilty, in an “ acte gratuit ”. Raskolnikov crosses social and moral boundaries, he must be punished. Mother and sister try to help him, so that the question arises, is there grace for him?

As if under a magnifying glass, the plot of the novel is focused on a room in which a self-destructive nightmare is peeled off. Going far beyond the original, Koltès also pulls women into the vortex of moral decline in a drunken process.

At the age of 23, Koltès took the novel as a template for a play that was published from the estate.
