The distinctive round building designed by the architect Erich Mendelsohn in the New Objectivity style is part of the WOGA complex on Lehniner Platz . The building was opened in 1928 as the largest cinema in Berlin (“Universum”). In World War II destroyed rebuilt after the war and re-used as a cinema and from 1969 as a dance hall and musical theater, it was finally in 1979 under monument protection provided. The Berlin architect Jürgen Sawade had already designed plans for the conversion of the building into a theater in 1975 and was able to win over the idea of the Schaubühne ensemble on Halleschen Ufer , which was looking for a new permanent venue. From 1978 to 1981 a multifunctional theater building was built, the technical equipment of which at that time corresponded to the highest standard. The interior can be flexibly divided, the conventional separation between the fixed audience area and the stage has been eliminated.

The Berlin Schaubühne

The beginnings of the Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz go back to the founding of the Berlin Schaubühne in 1962. At that time Jürgen Schitthelm - he was the only founding member and sole shareholder until October 2012 - founded a free theater group in a multi-purpose hall of the workers' welfare in Kreuzberg together with Leni Langenscheidt, Waltraut Mau, Dieter Sturm and Klaus Weiffenbach . In 1981 the Schaubühne ensemble moved to the renovated theater building on Lehniner Platz .

In the 1999/2000 season a final line was drawn under the Stein era. Peter Stein had withdrawn in installments since 1985. Audiences and critics alike have recently found less and less satisfaction in the productions. Now they tried a politically less provocative program. At the same time, they wanted to stay up to date, at least aesthetically. A team of young artists around the choreographer Sasha Waltz and the director Thomas Ostermeier and Jens Hillje jointly took over the artistic direction of the house. After the dance division withdrew from this position in the 2004/2005 season - while remaining at the Schaubühne at the same time - Ostermeier became the sole artistic director. In June 2005 Waltz terminated the cooperation agreement with the Schaubühne prematurely and permanently. The main point of contention was the distribution of the funding in the event of insufficient funding for both ensembles due to the poor budget situation in the state of Berlin.

Jürgen Schitthelm was director of the original founding group of the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer until October 2012. Jürgen Schitthelm was the longest-serving theater director in Germany. He was awarded the Berlin Order of Merit and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his commitment and services to culture . Since October 2012, Friedrich Barner, a member of the management since 1991, and Tobias Veit have been in charge. Jürgen Schitthelm will remain with the Schaubühne as a partner.
