Karl-Ernst Herrmann studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin under Willi Schmidt in the 1950s . He received his first engagement in 1961 at the Ulm Theater and became Wilfried Minks' assistant set designer under director Kurt Hübner .

A few years later he went with Hübner to the Städtische Bühnen in Bremen, where young directors like Peter Stein and Peter Zadek created exciting new interpretations of the German classics. In 1971 Peter Stein brought him to the Berlin Schaubühne on Halleschen Ufer , where he was permanently employed as a set designer until after moving to Lehniner Platz.

In addition to Peter Stein, Claus Peymann was the most frequent partner of Karl-Ernst Herrmann, for whom he mainly developed the stage sets for his Thomas Bernhard productions. The third permanent director was Luc Bondy , with whom he already worked at the Schaubühne in the 1970s.

In 1982 Herrmann made his debut as an opera director. Together with his wife Ursel Herrmann, he staged and illustrated La clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Brussels Opera . In addition to working as a set designer, directing an opera became his main occupation, always in the directing team with his wife.
