The hunting party is a drama by Thomas Bernhard . It was on May 4, 1974 at the Burgtheater Vienna premiere . Directed by Claus Peymann . The stage designer was the German opera director Karl-Ernst Herrmann .

Background to the premiere

Thomas Bernhard dedicated his piece to Bruno Ganz . According to Bernhard's wishes, he was to give the medical writer. In fact, Ganz had fought his way out of his obligations at the Schaubühne in Berlin for the occasion. According to Bernhard's story, however, the actors from the castle stood up and said: He won't come to the Burgtheater! Paula Wessely, on the other hand, who was supposed to be general, wanted to play only with Ganz. He himself, said Bernhard, had "such a stupid contract" that he could no longer get out. Peymann's production finally took place with Joachim Bissmeier (writer) and Judith Holzmeister (general). Werner Hinz played the general.
