Jhelam ( Punjabi : Shahmukhi :جہلم, Gurmukhi : ਜੇਹਲਮ, Jehalam; English Jhelum ) is a city in the north of the Pakistani province of Punjab with 179,149 inhabitants. 2017 census. It is the capital of Jhelam District . Jhelam is on the river of the same name ; on the opposite bank is the smaller town of Sarai Alamgir with a well-known military school.

The city was once founded by Alexander the Great under the name Alexandreia Bukephalus after his horse Bucephalus did not survive the battle of the Hydaspes here. One of the most striking buildings in the city is the Anglican St John's Church, completed in 1860, with its tower that can be seen from afar.

Not far from Jhelam are the fort Rohtas , the World Heritage of UNESCO , the Katas Raj Temple and the Khewra Salt Mine , the second largest salt mine in the world.
