Jhelam District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Punjab Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Jhelam .

The district has an area of ​​3587 km² and according to the 2017 census 1,222,650 inhabitants. The population density is 341 inhabitants / km². The Panjabi language is spoken by the majority in the district .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Rohtas and the Khewra Salt Mine are located in the district.

The district is located in the north of the Punjab Province, which is in the west of Pakistan. The Jhelam River flows through the district.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew by 1.41% annually. About 29% of the population live in urban areas and about 71% in rural areas. 601,964 men, 620,636 women and 50 transgender people live in 204,792 households , resulting in a gender ratio of 97 men per 100 women and thus a rare surplus of women for Pakistan. In 2006, 79% of the population could read and write, which is well above average. The district also has a low poverty rate.
