Khanewal District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Punjab Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Khanewal .

The district has an area of ​​4349 km² and according to the 2017 census 2,921,986 inhabitants. The population density is 672 inhabitants / km². The Punjabi language is spoken by the majority in the district .

history

The district was created in 1985 from parts of Multan .

geography

The district is located in the center of the Punjab Province, which is in western Pakistan.

The district is bordered by the districts of Jhang and Toba Tek Singh in the north, Sahiwal in the east, Vehari in the south and Multan in the west. The district's climate is hot and dry. The summer season starts in April and lasts until October.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew by 1.83% annually. Around 17% of the population live in urban regions and around 83% in rural regions. 1,484,692 men, 1,437,171 women and 123 transgender people live in 466,390 households , which results in a gender ratio of 103.3 men per 100 women and thus a male surplus typical for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 58% (women: 48%, men: 69%) and is thus below the Punjab province average of 63%.
