Rawalpindi District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Punjab Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Rawalpindi .
The district has an area of 5286 km² and according to the 2017 census 5,405,633 inhabitants. The population density is 1322 inhabitants / km². The Panjabi language is spoken by the majority in the district .
geography
The district is located in the far north of the Punjab Province, which is in the west of Pakistan, and borders the capital Islamabad . Rivers that flow through the area are the Indus and Jhelum .
history
Rawalpindi District was established under British rule as part of Punjab Province. The district received its current boundaries in 1904 when Attock was split off as a separate district.
In 1960, the capital territory of Islamabad was created from parts of the district.
Demographics
In the 1901 census by the British, the district had 558,699 inhabitants. With the establishment of Islamabad as the capital of Pakistan in the immediate vicinity, the area experienced a strong boom and population growth. The district is now one of the most urbanized regions in Pakistan.
Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew at an annual rate of 2.52%. About 53% of the population live in urban areas and about 47% in rural areas. There are 2,741,872 men, 2,663,075 women and 686 transgender people in 888,765 households , which results in a gender ratio of 103 men per 100 women and thus a male surplus typical for Pakistan.
The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population aged 10 and over was 83% (women: 76%, men: 90%) and thus well above the national average.
