Attock District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Punjab Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name Attock . The previous name was Campbellpur .

The district has an area of ​​6,857 km² and, according to the 2017 census, 1,883,556 inhabitants. The population density is 275 inhabitants / km². The Panjabi language is spoken by the majority in the district .

history

The original name of the district was Attock. It was changed to Campbellpur after the Commander in Chief of the British Forces, Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde , rebuilt the city of Campbellpur as part of the Sepoy Uprising of 1857. The name of the district was changed back to Attock in 1978.

geography

The district is located in the north of the Punjab Province, which is in the west of Pakistan. Attock is bordered by Chakwal to the south, Mianwali to the southwest , Rawalpindi to the east, Kohat to the west, Nowshera to the northwest and Swabi and Haripur to the north .

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew by 2.07% annually. About 26% of the population live in urban areas and about 74% in rural areas. 936,811 men, 946,683 women and 62 transgender people live in 306,649 households , resulting in a gender ratio of 98.9 men per 100 women, which is a rare surplus for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in 2014/15 among the population aged 10 and over was 68% (women: 57%, men: 81%).
