history

The brewery was built in 1678 instead of a burnt down brewery at Hirschberg Castle at the foot of the mountain. In 1803 the brewery and the other possessions of the Prince-Bishop went to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1805 the brewery with Beilngries came into the possession of Grand Duke Ferdinand III. and went back to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1812. In 1817 it was returned to the Principality of Leuchtenberg and again in 1852 to the Kingdom of Bavaria. In 1855 JB Prinster bought the brewery. Heinrich and Max Prinstner succeeded him in 1921. In 1937 Max Prinstner was the sole owner. In 1978 Jordan and Rose inherited the brewery and converted it into Altmühl-Bräu JP Prinster GmbH . In 1980 the brewing business was stopped.

In 1888 the brewery bought the Kratzmühle and used it from 1896 to generate electricity from hydropower. In 1982 it was renamed the Brauhaus Altmühltal GmbH . In 1980 or 1982 the brewery was taken over by Brau AG , today's Tucher-Bräu.
