Attock is a city in Punjab , Pakistan .

history

The town was named Campbellpur in honor of Sir Colin Campbell in 1908. The name was changed to Attock in 1978. Attock is 80 km from Rawalpindi and 100 km from Peschawar . Attock is located in a historically significant region. Gandhara used to be a kingdom that reached as far as the Swat Valley. Attock is of political and economic importance, as Attock has military and trade routes that reach as far as the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan . Alexander the Great , Timur and Nader Shah crossed the Indus and during the respective invasions of India. The Attock Fort was completed in 1503 under the direction of Khawaja Shahabuddin . The Battle of Attock took place in Attock in 1758. The battle was fought between the Marathi Empire and the Durrani Empire . The Marathas won the battle and occupied Attock. The Marathas defeated the Durranis at the Battle of Peshawar and occupied the city. The Marathas now reached the Afghan border. Attock was occupied by the Punjab Nawab and then again by the Durranis. The Sikh empire occupied Attock after the end of the Mughal empire . The Sikhs granted Muslims freedom of religion. The Sikhs occupied Attock Fort in 1813 under the rule of Ranjit Singh. Attock was founded in 1908 by Sir Colin Campbell and the Campbell District. Attock Khurd was occupied by the British East India Company in 1849 . Attock Khurd was founded near the Attock Fort in the 16th century. The Indian uprising of 1857 led the British to appreciate the region around Attock. The British founded the Campbell Cantonment there in 1857. The Campbellpore District was founded in 1904. The first oil well took place in 1915. Sikhs and Hindus emigrated to India after Pakistan's independence. Muslims from India emigrated to Attock.

According to a ranking by the Alif Ailaan Pakistan District Education Rankings 2014, the quality of education in Attock District is the leader in 146 districts. Attock has schools, universities and scientific institutes. The Pakistani Army operates several educational institutions in Attock.
