Philippe Jordan (born October 18, 1974 in Zurich ) is a Swiss conductor .

Life

Jordan was born the son of the conductor Armin Jordan and the dancer Käthe Herkner, his sister is the actress Pascale Jordan (* 1977).

He started taking piano lessons at the age of six, and two years later he became a member of the Zurich Boys' Choir . At 11 he began to play the violin and then at 16 he began studying piano pedagogy, which he successfully completed. Then he studied music theory and composition at the Zurich University of Music with the Swiss composer Hans Ulrich Lehmann and continued his piano studies with Karl Engel .

After completing his studies, Jordan took up a position as assistant to Jeffrey Tate in Aix-en-Provence and at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris for Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen . 1994–1998 Philippe Jordan began his first permanent engagement in the Philharmonic Orchestra at the Ulm Theater , initially as a répétiteur and assistant to chief conductor James Allen Gähres , and from 1996 as the first conductor . The final recognition as a conductor of world renown he achieved through his engagement at the State Opera Unter den Linden Berlin , where he worked among other things as an assistant to Daniel Barenboim (1998 to 2002).

From the 2001/02 season he was chief conductor of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra and the Graz Opera House . Here he directed, among others, highly regarded productions by Eugene Onegin ( Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowskij ), Don Carlos ( Giuseppe Verdi ), Parsifal ( Richard Wagner ), Ariadne auf Naxos ( Richard Strauss ) and Otello (Giuseppe Verdi). He left Graz in the summer of 2004 because of disagreements with the opera directors and those responsible for politics.

Since the 2009/10 season he has been musical director of the Opéra National de Paris . In addition, from the 2006/07 season he took over the post of Principal Guest Conductor at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden .

Philippe Jordan has been chief conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker since autumn 2014 . In July 2017 it was announced that Philippe Jordan would become music director of the Vienna State Opera on September 1, 2020 . As chief conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker, Andrés Orozco-Estrada will succeed him from the 2021/22 season .
