Rudolf Gamsjäger

Rudolf Gamsjäger (born March 23, 1909 in Vienna ; † January 28, 1985 there ) was an Austrian music manager and director of the Vienna State Opera from 1972 to 1976.

Life

Rudolf Gamsjäger worked as a textile technician in Vienna after studying chemistry and mathematics. 1935–39 he studied singing at the State Academy.

From 1945 to 1972 he was general secretary of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna . In his era he was able to book great artistic and economic success, u. a. he engaged Herbert von Karajan .

From 1958 he was appointed director of the Wiener Festwochen . Until 1968 he was also director of the Jeunesse in Austria.

From September 1, 1972 to August 31, 1976, he was director of the Vienna State Opera. The high points of his work were the premieres of Moses and Aron in 1973 and Boris Godunow in 1976.

Because of the intrigues against a state opera director, which was almost common in Vienna, he withdrew from this position after his term of office had expired. Rudolf Gamsjäger was married to Wilma Lipp for a while. Gamsjäger was a Freemason in Vienna.

He was buried in the Oslip cemetery.

    According to the Oesterreichischen Musiklexikon (see literature and the online version of this dictionary to be read here ) he died in a helicopter on the flight between Burgenland and Vienna.
