Heinrich Reif-Gintl (born October 7, 1900 in Vienna ; † July 13, 1974 there ) was an Austrian artistic director and director of the Vienna State Opera from 1968 to 1972.

Life

Heinrich Reif-Gintl attended Wasa-Gymnasium in Vienna , where he had Josef Krips as a classmate for three years . After graduating from high school, he studied law at the University of Vienna . He also attended musicological lectures and learned to play the violin and French horn.

After his doctorate as Dr. iur. In 1923 he joined the federal theater administration . From 1925 he worked under the direction of Franz Schalk at the Vienna State Opera. On July 1, 1927, he became assistant artistic secretary, and from September 1, 1937, he became executive secretary. After the “Anschluss” of Austria , he was relieved of his post in September 1938 because of his Jewish descent.

After the Second World War, Reif-Gintl was deputy director alongside Franz Salmhofer , who played in the Theater an der Wien during the reconstruction. In 1955 he was appointed head of the theater operations department of the federal theater administration. On January 1, 1965, he was appointed as deputy director of the State Opera alongside Egon Hilbert , who he succeeded as director from January 19, 1968. The negotiations with other candidates, such as Rolf Liebermann and Rudolf Bing , were unsuccessful.

In his term of office, which lasted until August 31, 1972, he ensured the State Opera a quieter time after the turbulent years under Herbert von Karajan and his predecessor, probably also due to the start of austerity measures and the reduction of legacy financial burdens. Nevertheless, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Haus am Ring in 1969, he gave the audience an impressive performance show by the ensemble: in 60 days he put 47 different operas and 5 ballets on the program. Another highlight of his era was the premiere of Einem's opera The visit of the Old Lady on May 23, the 1,971th
