Hans Gregor
Hans Gregor (born April 14, 1866 in Dresden ; † August 13, 1945 Wernigerode ) was a German actor , director and theater manager .
Life
Gregor was director of various German-speaking theaters, including 1898 to 1905 in Barmen and Elberfeld , 1905 to 1911 in Berlin and 1911 to 1918 in Vienna . He was a member of the Breslau United St. John's Lodge on the three dead skeletons, on the column and on the bell .
In 1905 he founded the privately run, first Komische Oper in Berlin on Friedrichstrasse on the Weidendammer Bridge . There he set new standards in the management of a private theater. He brought out 19 world premieres as well as spectacular performances of Jacques Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann , Hugo Wolf's Der Corregidor , Frederick Delius ' Romeo and Juliet in the village and Claude Debussy's Pelléas and Mélisande on this stage. However, his concept of an art without conventions, prejudices and artistic vanity did not work.
In 1911 he was appointed director of the KK Hofoper in Vienna and closed his loss-making company in Berlin.
A complete novelty for the KK Hofoper was that Hans Gregor had been placed through an agency. Despite his economic failure in Berlin, the reputation of a “successful art manager” preceded him in Vienna. Despite the war years from 1914 to 1918, he actually achieved great success during his time as director. The highlights were the premiere of Richard Strauss ' Der Rosenkavalier and the first performances of Richard Wagner's Parsifal and Franz Schmidt's Notre Dame . He expanded the ensemble with new engagements from Maria Jeritza , Lotte Lehmann and Alfred Piccaver .
One of the last performances under the direction of Gregor was Jenůfa by Leoš Janáček in February 1918. This performance was seen as a concession to the Czechs in the already disintegrating multi-ethnic state of the Habsburg monarchy and was not particularly well received by the German national press. With the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , Gregor's term of office in Vienna also ended.
He was married to the singer Della Rogers for a second marriage and apparently had several sons.
