Maria Jeritza , actually Maria Jedlitzka , also Mizzi Jedlitzka and Marie Jedličková , (born October 6, 1887 in Brno , Moravia ; † July 10, 1982 in Orange , New Jersey ), was a Czech opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Jeritza first studied piano , violin , cello and harp at the Brno Conservatory, then received vocal training in Brno, which she later continued in Prague , and began as a chorister at the Brno City Theater. In 1905 she made her debut at the Stadttheater Olmütz as Elsa im Lohengrin , in 1910 she performed as an operetta soprano at the Munich Art Theater and in the same year was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper , where she sang Blanchefleur in the world premiere of the opera Der Kuhreigen by Wilhelm Kienzl in 1911 . In 1912, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria , who had belonged to Jeritza in Bad Gastein , made her appointment to the Vienna Court Opera , where she celebrated great success as Prima donna assoluta . In 1912 she took on the title role in the world premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss at the Stuttgart Court Opera , appeared in the world premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten in the role of Empress at the Vienna State Opera in 1919 and gave guest appearances at all major European opera houses .

From 1921 to 1932 Jeritza was part of the New York Metropolitan Opera ensemble , where she made her debut as Marietta in Erich Wolfgang Korngold's opera Die tote Stadt . Then she returned to the Vienna State Opera. In 1928 she was seen in the Vienna premiere of the Egyptian Helena by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss at the side of Gunnar Graarud , conducted by the composer. In addition to her opera appearances, she also took on various film roles. After the Second World War , she made large donations to help rebuild the destroyed Vienna State Opera. During this time she had her summer residence in the Salzkammergut in Unterach am Attersee in a magnificent lake villa, which fell into disrepair for a long time after the war, but has now been beautifully renovated by the new owner. In memory of Maria Jeritza the main street of Unterach is called "Maria-Jeritza-Straße".

Marie Jedličková's first husband from Brno was called Wiener , but the marriage only lasted two years.

The divorced young opera diva Maria Jeritza married the Austrian Friedrich Leopold Salvator Freiherr Popper von Podhragy (1886–1986), owner of the banking house Hermann Korti & Co. , on March 13, 1919, at the age of 32. With him she acquired and built the estate and castle in Unternberg St. Corona am Wechsel in Lower Austria.

After another divorce, Jeritza married on July 29, 1935 in Santa Barbara , California an American 51-year-old film magnate and Vice President of the Fox Film Corporation , Winfield Richard ("Winnie") Sheehan (1883-1945), with whom she lived in Hollywood and later lived in New York.

When his widow married her in 1948 for the fourth time, this time the businessman Irving Seery from New Jersey , where she moved at the same time and remained until her death in 1982, it rests on the Holy Cross Cemetery (Holy Cross Cemetery) in North Arlington , New Jersey, United States .

Her autobiography was published in 1924 under the title Sun and Song . Richard Strauss dedicated his last completed composition to her in 1948, the song “Malven” (The beloved Maria, this last rose!).

In 1996 the Maria-Jeritza-Weg in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after her.
